View Full Version : move out or stay in ?

Should i move out or stay at home when i go to university ? my parents obviously say stay at home (bless em ) but i am unsure.

it seems that a lot of people are moving out going to University, and i feel that in order to 'gain the full experience' i should move out.

theres also the problem of whether i should stay in london or go out of london - if i stay in london i will always have my parents house as back-up if i dont like staying elsewhere, whereas i wouldnt if i moved out and would be stuck with smelly students (which i do NOT plan to be)

so have any of you got any advice ? (besides do what you think best suits you, i already heard that one)

your experiences would also be appreciated :)

There is a lot more freedom when you've moved out,lot of skill's you have to learn, cooking, cleaning, money management.
I think you should make the break!!!

I moved out when I went to uni, a fairly long way from home. Lots of my friends went to Cardiff - which isn't that far from where we live.

They had a great time, I had a great time.

The one thing you shouldn't do is stay at home. There were a few on my course who studied from their parents house and they just didn't seem to 'fit in'. Probably because they weren't in the middle of things on the weekend due to them being at their parents' house.

When you move out, you're in the same boat as almost all of the other folk on your course, everyone worries about missing friends and family, looking after yourself (cooking, cleaning etc.) and moving in with strangers but since it's the same for everyone - it doesn't seem that bad. You should definitely move out whether you decide to study in London or go further afield.

It seems to me that only a certain 'type' of person will stay at home :lookaroun

I think you really ought to examine what you are comfortable with, Gems.

You could start classes while at home and leave when you're sure you want to.

If you are ready and want to leave, then you should try that.

As to what others think of your situation, to Hell with them; if you feel pressured to situate yourself in accord with others' views, it should only be if you honestly decide you want to-by all means, give what you see others doing an honest appraisal, but make up your own mind.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is this:

Don't listen to manker, 'cuz he's just a horn-dog on the make...

don't go to uni at all, it's full of bloody students  saw a shite load of them today on the way home, with their bleached blond hair, pink shirts listening to cold play on their ipods whilst queuing for something they probably haven't earned :snooty:

uni might be kewl if everyone stopped dressing like cbeebies presenters, got proper hair cuts and didn't bang on the apartment door at half three in the morning because the silly midget bitch forgot her key

I moved 180 miles away, lived in some grotty places and got into debt. Also had a brilliant time, got very drunk and passed my exams. :)

I get the impression from things you have said, that you would like to move out.

Manker is right particularly with regard to all of you being in the same boat once you arrive and get into the flow of University life.

After all, most students do move out of the family home, its traditional....its time. :)

If not now, then when?

I couldn't wait to move out of home to go to uni, get my independence, etc.. The ones that stayed local and lived at home... well, that's just weird in my book.

Uni is the best time of your life, you can't enjoy it quite as much though if you still live at home... :naughty:
