Come on, the majority of this forum are mature enough to handle swear words. Do we REALLY need to edit them out? can we at least replace them with something like f*ck instead of the stupid :swear: thing?

Personally, I could give a shit about a curse word here or there. I didn't know that curse words werent allowed. Either way, this site is comprised of users who condone piracy. Filesharing is the reason we are all here. I doubt anyone on these forums is being offended by the creative uses of the word F*U*C*K* throughout these forums. :o :o :o :)

I can say all of this, because I feel that we, as an online community, police ourselves. We don't need anyone to do it for us. :) ;)

I don't think people should be given permission to swear. So far I havn't seen much of it but once (certain) people know they can do it, then they'll be more of it around. There are quite a few youngsters on this board that we have to think about.

Unfortunately, that is impossible as it is too easy to lie on the internet. Hell, most people on here think i'm a 26 year old female when infact i'm a 53 year old man!

Oh, and i'd be gratefull if you would keep that to yourself!

Whether mature or not, the site is not about swearing on a constant basis. Minimal swearing is no issue. It's those who choose to add them to every other sentence or every post that gets annoying. Some don't mind, some do, that's the purpose of the board rules. Meant as a guideline so to speak and as most of us know it indicates no excessive use, not no use whatsoever. So if we are mature enough to want to swear, we should be mature enough to at least take the rules into consideration when doing so.

emoticons are not a bad idea for replacement.

just to add my tuppence. i dont really mind swearing on this board..at times it is the easy thing to say but that said to use it to much is wrong.......

and like somebody said to swear shows how little you know of your own language to express yourself......

swear if needed but dont over do it B)

* Suddenly doesnt think that 'lil miss naughty is so HOT anymore.. runs and hides under computer table.* :(

Personally, I felt that the context in which the word was used was even more offensive than the word itself, as I feel that this was particularly disrespectful to the members of the board. Sure why not just insult the people you are requesting help from.. I guess some people aren't the brightest bulbs in the garden.

Edit: added my two cents.

I think a moderate use of foul language on this board is acceptable. When it leads to extreme usage it ought to be censored but not so much so such as on the Skinzaa board; somebody posted "gay" in their post and it was edited by a moderator and replaced with "happy". Now, that's just too low ... <_<

Wow, only just came across this thread.

OK, time to own up... :swear: was my idea. It was even me who made the smilie.

I just suggested it as a light-hearted way to reduce the profanity on the board - there is a bit too much in some threads (I'm not naming anybody though). There are kids here, and a lot of adults are offended by excessive profanity too. And it irritates any reasonable-minded person to see
fuck that, here is the shit
instead of
I don't like that, I prefer this

So anyway... the idea of autocensorship has been thrown out, VB was just experimenting with the idea. The swear smilie will remain, however.

My two cents: if you want to use a swearword in your post, type
:swear: instead - it's more friendly, it's less likely to offend and I for one find it :swear: ing endearing...

If it was really you, that's convenient as we don't live too far apart.

Let me know a reasonable central location and I will deliver my books there as presumably you wish to burn them.

I'll say it plain I wish the bastards dead - we can start with Richard III as Shakespeare is obviously not suitable for polite society.

Probably get away with most Kurt Vonnegut as well. No need to check each one, just burn them all.

If you wish to censor the written word, which this is, the natural extention of that is to censor books.

You are I assume aware of book burning in the USA when they didn't approve of the content. I believe it was also done in nazi Germany and other places.

Shakespeare, Kurt Vonnegut and many other great authors have used words you deem innapropriate.

If you wish to maintain your freedom of expression you cannot at the same time justify curtailing the same right for others.

There is much on this board which I disagree with. There is much in life which I disagree with. However I must uphold other peoples right to say what they want. In that way I support my own right to do the same.

Lamsey

And in any case, I was trying to enhance the board because I though people would like the smilie. Evidently I was wrong, which is why the idea has not been implemented.

I think the current situation works well - can we agree on that?

The swear smilie is now invoked by

That way it only appears if you actually want to use it - it is just like any other smilie.

It is at the bottom of the 'show all smilies' window.

I am being consistant. I support his right to say what he wants. That gives me the right to reply in any way I want. That's what I said.

Your idea was to disallow people from doing something, which was censorship of expression.

In fact I think you will agree I don't swear very often at all. Other than in this thread which was more to make the point than anything else. I may sometimes be a bit h4r5h, but not usually through using foul language. However I support other peoples right to do it, if that is how they prefer to express themselves.

We agree on most things I think. I may actually have been you 60 or so years ago. I think the smiley being available enhances the board. That way people who don't really want to swear can use that as an alternative.

Swear, me?

Not :swear: ing likely...

My dad is an archaeologist and used to work with a Youth Opportunity Scheme, which basically meant that school dropouts were paid to dig on his site.
They were working in an urban site once, right in the middle of a residential area.

One day, a wee old lady came to complain to my father (the supervisor) about the language being used by some of the youths, as she was playing with her grandchildren in the garden and didn't want the kids hearing any profanity.
So, my dad went and rounded up the workers and said to them "Listen, guys, you'll have to cut down the swearing - the locals are getting offended."

They all looked shocked and one of them said in an affronted tone of voice:

"Whut? Nae cunt here's fucking swearing!"

I hope you're joking.

It was a quote intended to make a point - ie. swearing is inappropriate when it does not add meaning to the sentence. It should be a learning experience for young children, as it is clear that people look down on this kind of thing.

It is in my firm belief that if people cannot handle the vulgarities experienced in the course of modern speech, they should feel it upon themselves to vacate the area. Nobody is forcing them to stay there, and they (anti-swearing people) could be much more effective and much less disruptive by simply leaving than by sitting there and complaining about it all the time. When somebody proves to me that somebody is indeed holding a gun to their head and forcing them to endure the word 'fuck', I will change my opinion. But until that fateful day arrives, I simply say, "Leave! And do not come back."

I am not by this post saying that I am supporting the excessive use of vulgarities, and nor am I saying that people who don't like it don't have a valid argument; modern discourse is quite without the need of obscenities. I am, however, saying that there are many better ways to deal with it. Perhaps asking blatant offenders to quit, and failing that, having them kicked/banned? Simply leaving the chat room? With all due respect, if the swearing is so bad that you have to leave, there is nothing in the room that you would miss.

Again I see uptight control freaks all over that can't live with other people's

As for the swearing on the topic, I think it's childish to edit it out (like kids saying "oh, you said the f word). Concern is only needed if the swearing is at someone or to cause offense.

oh, and for the people who have no reply to "stop swearing" try:

Have an idea, who's gonna count the swear/curse words...

we have to define a blacklist,

the controller will count every curse/swear word he sees, and in december 2003 you have to pay up a dollar/euro for every cursed word you wrote.... Think we have an idea for paying the server then to.... :)

Who wanna be the controller and which words do we need to put on the list... ? B)

Come on, the majority of this forum are mature enough to handle swear words. Do we REALLY need to edit them out? can we at least replace them with something like f*ck instead of the stupid :swear: thing?

If you can't control yourself using normal words to get your words/meaning across to other people, you shouldn't be allowed to speak. simple as that, if you feel you need to swear, take a moment and step away from your pc and count to 10. <_<

sometimes i use swear words to get a point across.

if you can't handle it, skip the words. take a deep breath, and count to ten.

i consider swear words to be normal words... how are they different?

"Whut? Nae cunt here's fucking swearing!"

That's just outrageous. This is the worst example of profanity I have seen on this board.

How could you, there are young children reading this you know. This surely must call for a weeks ban.

For goodness sake mods, can't something be done about this. [/b][/quote]
ROFLMAO!

HOLY :swear:!

btw, i hated that smiley, good idea, bad original use... i like it much better in its current form... freedom of expression is at its last hurrah, with help via the internet... we start censorship here, its all over...

Agreed. The internet remains one of the few true places where freedom of speech is recognized outside of US bounderies. In this community, everyone has a voice.

If I have to suffer thru broken english and spammers, then you can suffer thru the occasional F*U*C*K.

But seriously, this community can police itself. We don't need anyone to do it for us.

"You shouldn't be allowed to speak."

Where do you live. Don't you think that's taking censorship to it's extreme. If you don't express yourself in a way I feel appropriate then you have no voice.

well i think the curse/swear words are used way to easy...

Sometimes if you think about what you use instead of them you get a more constructive post...

Fuck you....
That's not true

i don't agree with you,
i think it's different

In a way saying the same..... sounds a lot different though, think where the 1st one will put the original poster in an agressive defense, the 2nd one will start dialog...
So start thinking about using other words in stead of the curse ones

just my opinion................

Opinions are like (_o_)'s... everybodys got one...

j/k jet je, i just really wanted to post a an ass on the forum, lol.

But u are true, some people tend to go overboard, i know i myself have let a few extras slip that werent maybe neccessary, but thank goodness i have the ability too, when need be, free speech, is not only key for expression, but integral the ability to have a free society.
