help? my waist size is 35-36". i'm 5'11". i need to loose the flab asap. what's the fastest way to loose my flab and to get some 4 packs or 6 packs?

there's the obvious situps. but those take months to see results.

I have an 8-pack and I hate sit-ups 'cause they hurt my back (I still grind it out sometimes though).

I use the Ab-Lounge and do it while watching TV. I hate the fact I bought a fucking machine though for abs.

I also do knee-lifts (bent and str8 leg) and oblique sit-ups (VERRRRY IMPORTANT).

Why settle for a six pack when you can have a barrel?

According to my niece (who is a pyscho fitness instuctor) just exercising your tummy muscles standing up will flatten and tone the abs. All that weight lifting and scrunching stuff is apparently not that good for you.

She says swimming is also quite good (although she would say that as I'm sure my sister's lot were born with gills  )

Correct....however I do knee lifts on a dip/wide arm pull-up contraption.

Oblique exercise is important 'cause what good is a six-pack when it's packaged in pudding?

Cardio exercise is important as well. Everyone has a six-pack but it's hidden under abuncha pudding.

Lift weights
Less cardio
Eat (high lean protein, low sugar, multivitamin, vegetables, fruit blahblahblah,)

In particular, eat protein 15 min before and after you lift.

One day do arms and legs
Next day chest and back
Abs everyday

i just read a few articles on random sites. apparently, the best way to loost flab is to do cardiovascular and whole-body exercises. sit-up's really only tone the 6 pack that u already have. the whole-body exercises looses the fat so the 6 pack comes up to the surface.

so wat would u recommend? my school has a crappy but sufficient fitness center. there's some treadmills and bikes and stepping machines and there's the resistence/weight training equipment that i mainly use.

What sports do you like? Do more of it.

Swimming is the best. It's no impact and combines cardio and "natural weight lifting". You must go against the water.

Running in your neighborhood is good too. I used to hate running on a track 'cause "when you're over here, you look across the track and think shit I gotta be over there, then when you get over there.............".

For your neighborhood run, drive the route you'd like to take. Make sure you odometer is reset and drive a 1, 3, and 5 mile route. Work up to the different routes. Depending on if you are really out of shape, I recommend you start with a 3 mile run.

You could do a million sit ups a day but it won’t do you any good. Sit ups and ab exercises help to tone the abdominal muscles, but to make them show you need to loose the weight.

Exercise is very important but without a correct diet you’re pissing in the wind. You need to eat the right foods to help you to burn the calories, which is what leads to weight loss. Starving yourself and eating 2 or 3 times a day isn’t enough. What you should do is to eat healthy meals and also eat things like protein bars and shakes throughout the day.

The only way that you can achieve weight loss is by hard work and determination. There are no such things as magic pills or ab machines that will give you six pack abs with no hard work.

Hit the gym hard and eat the right foods.

Hmmm.

You're not awfully heavy for your height.

I'd say Busyman's regimen is a good one.

BTW-

Those other numbers you mentioned are sort of, well........small.

Best to work on them a bit (perhaps double them) before you bring them up again. ;)

Geez, I haven't lifted seriously for about 20 years, and I'll bet I could still bench 250 lbs.

When I was 17, I weighed 225 at 6' 0", benched 415, and could do 225 in quick sets of 25 reps.

Things were simpler then, though; cardio wasn't nearly as refined, and sit-ups and crunches were the only road to good abs if you weren't a metabolic freak.

I'm almost glad I wrecked my knees, 'cuz I'm pretty sure I'd have gotten into steroids if I'd been able to keep playing football.

Probably be dead.

Then Busyman's got the goods, I'd say.

Even if your back is in good shape, and you've never injured it, don't do any of the exercises that impact it, 'cuz there's no need.

Standing exercises are great.

so to sum all this craziness up:
- decent diet
- run like the wind
- swim (too bad i'd have to drive a bit to get to a swimming pool. my school's gay, and the pools off limits to non-swim-team people)
- don't run on a track, cuz it'll make u depressed

Hitchhiker: You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?
Ted: Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the excercise video.
Hitchhiker: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7... Minute... Abs.
Ted: Right. Yes. OK, alright. I see where you're going.
Hitchhiker: Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin' there, there's 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
Ted: I would go for the 7.
Hitchhiker: Bingo, man, bingo. 7-Minute Abs. And we guarantee just as good a workout as the 8-minute folk.
Ted: You guarantee it? That's - how do you do that?
Hitchhiker: If you're not happy with the first 7 minutes, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".
Ted: That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-Minute Abs. Then you're in trouble, huh?
[Hitchhiker convulses]
Hitchhiker: No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
Ted: That - good point.
Hitchhiker: 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
Ted: Why?

You could do a million sit ups a day but it won’t do you any good. Sit ups and ab exercises help to tone the abdominal muscles, but to make them show you need to loose the weight.
What do you think toning is doing....creating a shiny glaze? It's getting rid of fat.

Doing tons of sit-ups also raises the metabolism. I lift weights and do cardio in the morning 'cause makes me burn fat all day.

"What do you think toning is doing....creating a shiny glaze? It's getting rid of fat."

Um. Actually, toning is tightening up of loose musculature. Its possible to do a million sit ups and not see the benefit due to a layer of flab covering the newly toned muscle. You need to combine aerobic fat burning exercise with muscle-toning work. No point toning if your new shiny muscles are buried under flab!

Btw what makes muscles loose?

Yeh, there's only so much you can do with what you have, and you need to keep realistic goals in place. You're never gonna have a tall lean figure, if you are short and round in the first place. You can attempt to make the best out of what you've got, but everyone's different.

2. I rarely have talked about working out until recently 'cause of a diet. I don't workout that much. I'm just happen to be a mesomorph.

3. I ain't the only one who wants and talks about having a nice car.

4. My 6 guns aren't huge unless we're talking about my arm size.

Btw, good looking guys with a personality don't give a shit about working out, what car they drive nor what fire arms they currently own - as a consequence, they rarely talk about such things.

Just FYI ;)
It was CaptainObvious it was joke however....

1. I talk about what car I have basically when everyone else does. It ain't a really nice sports car. What am supposed to have...the types of bucket you drive.

2. I rarely have talked about working until recently 'cause of a diet.

3. I ain't the only one who wants and talks about having a nice car.

4. My 6 guns aren't huge unless we're talking about my arm size.

5. No one can deny that I have plenty of personality. Never a dull moment.

6. .....yes people do talk about such. Not a particular focus for me.

Just an FYI.I have a pretty decent car, some might call it quality, it's brand new too. However, only DanB knows what it is (he's seen it) 'cause I don't mention it on here - many people use their car as a status symbol, talking to these types is something which I find interminably boring. I avoid it at all costs.

I don't work out at all - I think people who lift heavy weights on a regular basis are compensating for something. Either they have a chronic lack of personality or are really fucking ugly. Well, everyone I know who is a member of a gym falls into either one or the other of those catagories ... and I know a lot of people.

Owning a gun is silly, owning six is fucking stupid.

The point is that is s0000 great you keep your car a secret. I don't feel the need to own a BMW 7 series with shiny wheels and nice supple leather..sighhhh....but I want one. Many others have spouted out the cars/trucks they have or want. I doubt it was compulsory.

Staying in shape is one thing, I do that with football, lifting heavy weights is another. It's compensating for something else.

Less strength, muscular body? Again that's great you stay in shape with soccer. Some people are uncomfortable with heavy weights, mentally or physically and don't want the hassle. Maybe folks should stop brushing their hair, doing aerobics, or yoga too. They might be compensating.

You only do what you're comfortable doing and if it's healthy.

Owning six guns is fucking stupid, I've told you why many, many times.

Damnit!

I saw your name at the bottom of the thread and, well - this may be presumptuous but I kinda figure you're going to be pro-gun ownership, so thought it would make a nice change to argue with someone other than Busy about his guns. Nevermind :D

Btw, the cage matches in the WWE are real, not like the choreographed stuff you normally get - I highly doubt Busy would be so agressive IRL and think he'd back out of a cage match.

Plus, he's only 5'5". It would be like putting HHH in with Ross Perot.

Food and Exercise

Finally, The Straight Dope On Food & Exercise

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this
true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Everything
wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live
longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by
driving it faster. Want to live longer? ... Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and
corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an
efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?
Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy
vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily
allowance of vegetable slop.

Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?

A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As
we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three
categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and
wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements,
so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a
beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one
to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular
exercise program?

A: Gee ... I can't think of a single, solitary one, sorry. My
philosophy is: No Pain -- No Pain.

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the
middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You
should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had.
