Hi folks, firstly if this is already in here I apologise as for some reason search is not working.

Just recently by DVD writer stopped recognising discs (any kind). It lights up as if reading but does not detect anything (explorer says please insert a disk).

My CD Rom still works just fine.

Does this just mean it's time for a new one?

When did the problem start?
Have you tried restarting your PC?
Does it read CD media?

Yes, tried restarting pc. does not ready any discs - media, bank, audio - nothing! Started about 2 months ago but no idea what could have caused it. PC still recognises the drive is there though.

If it still has warranty the use that.

I could be just dirt on the lens. Try cleaning it.

If that doesn't work then replace it.

okay, installed new writer - BENQ DW-1625. Has anyone used this before. If so can they tell me if green light should keep running when a disc is loaded?

My recommendation would be to stop buying cheap writers. I used to bargain shop when it came to writers and I continuously had problems with the burning process. I think I was burning up the lasers er something. Once I went out and spent a decent amount on a good NEC writer, problem solved. :)

Just recently by DVD writer stopped recognising discs.

Silvery shiny round things with a hole in the middle. Can't miss 'em... ;)

Did you try the lens cleaning?
