Is there a word I can use instead of the phrase "the final nail in the coffin of ...", or at least another phrase?

Ooh, just thought of one: "Straw that broke the camel's back."

Nah, still a bit too hackneyed.

The breaking point...

I think I'm gonna try and use the idiom "at a low ebb". According to Dictionary.com it's a bit anachronistic, which makes it less hackneyed.

Does anyone have a good synonym for hackneyed, by the way?

I'm not rodding ... I'm thinking in order to have shellfish in a sandwich, there has to be some batter or breadcrumbs involved

Scallops are molluscs.

Potato scallops are shaped like scallops, hence the name.

Both are tasty.

Andy Race's Fish Shop in Mallaig do tremendous scallops.

They are rope grown in 60 metres of water so are totally grit free. Also they are fresh into the shop and sold the same day.

I don't eat them me'self but have cooked them for others many times, with orgasmic results.
