View Full Version : NTFS or FAT32?

Just downloaded a full DVD rip but can't extract it from the RAR because the size is over 4GB and my hard drive file system is FAT32. :pinch:

Anyone else still got a FAT32 partition? I've had this hard drive for a good few years and the FAT fromat is the only way I've ever formatted my drives. I'm still living in the stone age. :(

I hear both have advantages tho. While NTFS uses smaller clusters and is supposed to be slightly more stable in the face of power outages etc., FAT32 is also said to be a little faster. Of course, my only source for this is a quick Google search. I haven't got a clue personally.

Anyone else as ignorant as me when it comes to hard drives?

definetely ntfs. ntfs can hold a 16TB file. Fat32 only 3-4 GB's..

as soon as I moved to an OS that supported ntfs I never went back. There's no reason to.

Depends on what you mean by my main drive, I've got operating systems using NTFS, FAT32 and Reiser FS.

Most of my partitions are of the NTFS variety, tho'.

i just wish more linux distro's had better support for ntfs i guess thats my only gripe since fat32 out of the box supported while ntfs partitions i have to mount and can not write to them

Obviously NTFS...people who voted for FAT3 2 just did it for the fun of it, or it could be that they're using some really ANCIENT compy with a <5GB harddrive.
