I am making my own computer but i just cant decide which one to get a AMD or a Intel, even though most places, Intel gets better in benchmarks, like on toms hardware. But I have heard from many people that they recomment AMD still.

For all you AMD and Intel users, which one do you personally perfer?

I am thinking of either getting a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ or a Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.4 GHz.

So tell me what you think! :D

well, if u would have searched, you would have seen many, many threads on this topic.

but if your looking at either one or the other of those cpus, get the 2400xp. Its cheaper, last i looked, and it outperforms the 2.4 gigahertz if I am not mistaken, at least in many benchmarks it does... cept like the q3, fps tests, etc.

this is really an ongoing topic. there's not really an answer either way, it's pretty much down to personal choice and how deep your pockets are. i'm a bit biased, i have an athlon just now, but i'd have to go for the athlon. the the performance that amd seems to be able to get from their hardware is more than intel gets from their pentiums. i've replied to a similar post http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?act...ST&f=31&t=27496 (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?act=ST&f=31&t=27496)

the bottom line in this question is that both the pentium 4 and athlons above around 2000+ are fast enough for basically everything you need. if you're going for total performance at any cost, the answer has to be the pentium 4 3.06GHz cpu, however if you want both performance and value for money, imo it's amd that has to win

It is personal choice really both are very good.

The main desicion is this:

If you have the money buy a pentium 4.

If you do not have money get a AMD Athlon XP.

Pentium has very high prices and is a rip off. My opinion i like AMD better but others will disagree. The new AMD Athlon 3000+ Barton Core is excellent and is very good.

The AMD model rating reflects the speed in MHz of a roughly equivalent Pentium 4.

So a 2400+ Athlon is not noticeably different from a 2.4GHz P4 - you'll never see any difference unless you use a benchmarking program.

Look at the prices and you'll see which to go for.

It's much more important to choose a good motherboard; for AMD Athlons I recommend the Asus A7N8X Deluxe (I don't know about P4s 'cos I don't use them).

just the fact that amd's 2.0 gig processors (2400) perform
equivilent to a pentium 2.4 makes me think amd
makes the better product.
plus the better price makes it a no brainer for me.
but this arguement always depends on who you ask.

Thats not true anymore.

the new 800mhz front side bus Pentium 4 3.0ghz is faster then the 3.06ghz, and they are cheaper....

the 3.0 gig p4 has been held back, due to the anomoly's mentioned in the other post on this topic.

this cpu isn't out yet, so it cannot be judged as retail
therefore the 3.06 gig is still the fastest currently available

The AMD Althon XP 2400 is 2.0ghz, BUT has a higher cache rate than the P4.
The P4 is a 2.4ghz, but lower cache rate..

AMD is high end, since they dont just focus on the mhz/ghz, they focus on everything else on that chip as well.

the 2400 is faster

I personally don't route for the underdogs, together Intel and Microsoft will rule this world

Well, the overclocking rates on an Intel chipset are great. An Intel Xeon 3.06GHz can be overclocked to 3.7GHz. That's a whopping 640MHz!!!

Intel tend to run faster as well and I've heard that they generate less heat. I can speak ;) I've only got a P4 2.0GHz :)

Intel have made it to the 64 Bit platform as well, and AMD haven't. Intel have released the Itanium :D

And laptop wise, the Centrino have won the battle. Due to the Intel Centrino, laptops have never been so thin, generate less heat and use less battery. And it's crammed full of features such as IEEE 1394, USB 2.0, TV-Out and 802.11g (or something like that).

Intel have released the Itanium
Yeah but no-one uses it, at least on the desktop market.

Hammer will be released later this year and will be very useful for desktops since it will be backwards-compatible with 32b applications - unlike Itanium.
Microsoft are going to bring out a special edition of Windows XP 64b to use the Hammer's abilities.

Well they basicly beat each other in diffrent ways.
They will run certain apps faster than each other..
depends

Yeah but you'll only really notice the difference in benchmarks.

If you use one computer with an Athlon and another with an equivalent P4, you won't notice any real speed difference.

Benchmarks are all very well but they can lead you to believe there's a bigger difference than there is - who cares if an Athlon runs Quake II at 3 fps faster?

I know my hardware... note i started the thread you mentioned.... and yes... it is retail...

Heres one... (http://www.spartantech.com/product.asp?m1=pw&pid=INP4%2D800%2D300BOX)

search for 3.0ghz 800mhz at price watch, and you will find more... (http://www.pricewatch.com)

"the annomaly", apparently was related to the bean counters, (prices, etc) according to the news from INQ.... ie the fact that the 3.0 does out perform the 3.06, and was cheaper, they were workin on pricing issues...

i'm not trying to step on your toes or anything. i know you started the thread and i know you have more knowledge than me, but i come from the uk, and the 3.0 gig isn't available here yet.

Schmiggy_JK23
04-21-2003, 05:06 PM
ok, so be it.

but it is retail... :P

you should be able to order from us sites online, cant you?

amphoteric88
04-21-2003, 05:17 PM
i was gonna order my new comp from the us, but the shipping costs would be prohibitively expensive. plus if i had any problems with the hardware, i'd have to send it back, which would be pretty expensive again.
also, the voltages of the mains power supply are different here. in the uk, it's 230 volts, but in the us it's 110 volts i think.

If your getting an athlon just remember to get a decent heat sink - I'm new to making computers and have fried 2 XP chips in a row :(

Also you can get 3.00 and 3.06 ghz proccessors from UK sites :)

Yeah, always get a copper cooler. It's worth the money just to be safe.

people says in general that AMD runs faster that Intel. Although at the same time Intel is better when working with large video and image files...

intel 1.8 = 98 degrees
amd 1.8 = 120 degrees

hmmm i think i will stay with my intel machine

Xactly....Intel in general runs at a lower temp, which mean less cooling, which in general (unless alternate sources of cooling, i.e. water) are used, it is gonna be quieter to use...less fan noise

As has been stated, each have their own strengths and weaknesses...

Supposedly most of the Audio Apps are optimized for Pentium, which I why I use 'em...

To me, the difference in price is not that great, so I go for the Pentium...a 1 gHz PIII in this box, and a 2.4 P4 in my recording box...

amphoteric88
04-30-2003, 02:38 PM
athlons are very efficient per clock cycle. which means that an athlon with a clock speed of just 2.16 GHz is very close to a Pentium 4 with clock speed 3.06 GHz. this means that when processors become faster (e.g. the P4's are at clocks of 5 GHz or more), the Athlons are still only gonna be around 3 GHz.
this should mean that the athlon's cooling problem (which isn't really that apparent), will pale into insignificance as the Pentiums fry themselves :D

Schmiggy_JK23
04-30-2003, 07:08 PM
The issue over cooling is really irrelevant. So you can you use the stock cooler that comes with most retail intel chips... wheres as with a AMD, maybe you want a high cooler, a volcano7, or 9, or something, its not that big of deal, and tech wise, the difference in temp doesnt mean all that much, they both run at perfectly acceptable temps.

amphoteric88
04-30-2003, 08:55 PM
the max die temp for athlon's is higher than pentiums generally too, so the increase in temperature (which isn't a lot), doesn't damage the hardware.

The heatsink dont cost that much even the good ones, having a good heat sink in general is a great thing to have even if your not overclocking, the CPU is so important why not treat it nicely w/ p4 or AMD

So i come to the conclusion, that who ever has a CPU in their computer *cough * should get a nice heatsink-
Such as follows:

HEATSINK = GOOD (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=aeroflow+amd)

in conslusion: Shell out the 33 dollars.

i run a lan with over 1000 users so we have a lot of comps on it that i and my staff have to fix if something gos wrong with them

we have resently tryed out 50 amd based comps and have found that they are too much trobble. out of the 50 we tryed 3 had the amd prossesers go bad with in 1 year
not only this but we found that there was 3 times the amount of service call on the amd based comps. all though not all ways hardware related most of the calls seem to come during the winter months when users where using space heaters in there cubes. the comps all have there own sepret isolated ground electric system so it not a power problem. my theroy is that it was due to heat problems. we have got rid of every amd system we had and will not buy any more

we have never had a pentium go bad ever in the 5 years i have be the admin
so my recomendation is to go with the pentium as they are much more reliable

but this said the amd is cheeper so if ur gona keep upgrading the cpu say every 6 months or so u might want to go with a AMD
but if u want it to last till its just so obsolet that u have to get a new comp go with the pentium

So, it really comes down to a question of durability, not speed?
In that case I would put my $ on Intel :o
