how many out there use IP blocking tools like PeerGuardian or Protowall?
or just share download files without?

a firewall does not count

(where are the poll options??)

No I dont.

What options do you want? A mod can add them.

It just depends on what u are doing. Just use them when you are visiting/ dling from public torrent sites, ect. I've blocked the MPAA a few times.

I always have PeerGuardian on... it literally uses 0% CPU usage... so it's like it's not even there... :)

I tend to make sure it is running when DLing a new popular release
but if it comes to DLing a budget film or a 3 year old game that has a lack of seeds i make the exeption of turning if off for a little while to see if i get faster DL

I have seen lots of companys popup Sony, RIAA, MPAA, universal pictures and so on

well what really happens is when an Ad is blocked on the page the browsers attempts to connect to the blocked host (timeout is like 10 secs)
after that it retrys (3 times in most cases)
soo in all you get 30 second lag :S

to completely avoid any of that click "allow HTTP"

if you use azureus, goto plugins>installation and get SafePeer. i think it uses the same list as peerguardian but only in azureus :schnauz:

I voted no a while back, however, after reviewing the newest version of Peer Guardian and noticing how much less resources it eats, I've decided to use it again.

Before when you had to update the lists manually, and it blocked all your favorite web pages, it was just to much of a hassle to use. Now all the IP address' are autoupdated and it uses less then 1% cpu, it's better then ever, and a must have!

My peerguardian has tons of IPs to block (20 lists).
I only use it when p2p is running. Doesn't slow down my speeds one bit.

Can't run it with other apps like Online Games...it'll block the wrong the wrong stuff.

i use peerguardian whenever i'm online. I have the block http thing on too and i always think that i'm naked on the net without it on. Its like having no firewall. I even have it running when i'm not downloading.

I used to use PeerGuardian, but then it started to act all weird with me; not updating, can't access certain websites, restarts the PC if a certain website was opened when switching users...etc., so I stopped.

Uhhh... If a website is blocked its cause HTTP is blocked. You can unblock it temporary by enabling HTTP or just right click the IP in the log area and temporarily allow for 15 min, 1 hr, or permenantly. :frusty: It restarted your computer? I'd virus scan your hard drive, and I've never heard of PG2 of doing this :ermm: Google it?

I never know if it is really worth it or not. When I leave it on overnight, I will come back and see it has blocked like 23908423984 ips, but I dont think they are of any imporance. Some are weird like South Korean University or something, weird universities or like other crap.

I'm a member of Demonoid and BootCity, and also a Pink Floyd fan. At both sites, there are threads that describe torrent uploaders being inundated with "phantom peers" (not sure exactly how to describe it)... It seems the R**A is trying to disrupt Pink Floyd torrents. If you're a member, check out these threads:
Demonoid: http://www.ruzster.koreru.com/forum/index.php/topic,554.msg4155.html#msg4155
BootCity:

After reading these, I installed PG2 and never go online without it...

I use pg2 when I have my p2p client running which is always :) I've actually only just started using pg2 in the last month. I first tried out pg ages ago and it fucked up my computer...IE: slowed it down made it crash ect. But pg2 seems fine. Though I'm not to sure how much good it does?? I mean the anti p2p forces prob use random IP's right if they realy want to get you using pg2 or pw isn't going to stop them. on another note does anyone have sugestions as to which block lists to use??

lambsbreath

I created 3 lists for PG2 to block these:
64.124.145.*
38.100.25.*
38.100.26.*

(edit): This is in addition to enabling gov, p2p, and spy lists(/edit)

not only do I use peerguardian but I have Zonealarm(firewall) bloking all the bad guys. also if you download off of private sites disable you DHT settings as this alows people to connect to your IP when downloading. When DHT is disabled it does not show your IP to others!!

What are you talking about?? Even with DHT disabled, everyone can get everyone else's IP address without even connecting to them.. All someone has to do is connect to the tracker and they get the entire swarm's IPs.......... Peerguardian wont even help you in that situation cause they didnt even connect to you. :(

I here what you are saying here but for criminal purposes just being there does not make you guilty. They then have to collect evidence, if they recieve any part of a file from you then you can be guilty of trafficking or piracy. The only way they can get this is for you to allow the connection and actually send them a piece of the file as if they were your friendly peer. The blockers should block this type thing in theory.

I have started using PG2 and the majority of the blocked IPs seem to be SAFEnet and DONet. I do get the occasional Big 4 ip blocked as well. Still working on how to import block lists from other places to increase the security, but if it your time it is your time and no ammount of programs are going to protect ya from THE MAN.

On occasions, I do use it. Some files are corrupted in P2Ps like Limewire, and if you turn on PeerGuardian, you can download the files without corruption :D So, yupp - that's when I use an IP blocking tool.
