I'm putting together the parts I just bought, and now that I have the case open the mobo screwed onto the case, I cant find out what the risers do... I know they're supposed to keep the mobo from touch the case, but I can't find a place to install them! Do they go on top of your mobo just like the screws? or do they go somewhere else?

i thought they go into the case and then the mobo sits on top of em but thats what i thought and then you screw more screws onto the risers

Stop what you're doing right now!

Don't go any further until you have a full understanding of all the parts involved.

The risers are supposed to go between the case and the motherboard.

Whatever you do, don't power on the system until you are completely sure it's done right. Take your time and don't be afraid to ask any questions.

Install them similar to this:

http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/aopen_hx45/14.jpg

Put each standoff under each screw point. Be sure to not put any where there aren't screws.

so the risers go in between the mobo and case? Then the screws go on TOP of the risers? But i got plastic risers and I can't fit my mobo on top of the risers...wtf omg:cry:

Screw the plastic risers into the case at each support point and then the mobo snaps onto the plastic pins.

But I would try to get brass standoffs instead.

Btw. It's easier to install the CPU before installing the mobo.

The short/skinny ends on those risers go into the holes on teh case, the fat and long ends go through teh holes on your motherboard and hold the mobo on themselves wihtout screws.
These are the brass risers: http://www.fortune3.com/~comp77123/51610116.jpg
The riser screws into the case holes and then the mobo sits on top of them, and screws go through the mobo into those brass risers.

When I first put my computer together I didn't know about those things and ended up shorting the board. :frusty: The guy where I bought the board were nice enough to give me a new board free tho. :)

Thx for replies, and I got the mobo into the case (yay!).

Now I'm installing the cpu, and i was just wondering, should i just go with the thin layer of factory applied thermal paste or should i buy my own brand-name thermal paste for my cpu fan? I use a socket 939 3200+ venice core, and the heatsink came with the cpu.

If you're using the factory HSF just go ahead and install using the pre-applied TIM.

Like VB1234 said before it's a lot easier to install the CPU and heatsink if the mobo is out of the case...

Well if you want to get technical...
You should have installed the CPU, RAM and vid card and posted the board outside the case.

To kinda see if it worked, like, before it went into the case.
But we're past that now.

Yah I had a bit of trouble getting the x800GTO into the PCI-e slot cuz of the crammed space. Now i just have to shop for a better power supply and a new case fan.

Btw, i only found 5 mobo risers, and I fixed them 4 onto the corners of the mobo, and one in the middle out of 9 possible spots to fit mobo risers. Do i really need a riser in each of the 9 mobo risers? The mobo seems perty steady right now

Anyways do I really need a twin 12v rail? My parts don't use THAT much power, and my pic-E video card is a radeon rather than a power-hungry nvidia 6*** card.

If going single 12V rail, I'll go with this:

Superflower 550W TT-550SS
Cost: $54.99
Rails: +3.3V@35A, +5V@50A, +12V@30A
Hold Time: 16ms
Cooling: 1x120mm LED
PFC: No
Mobo: 20pin

If I go twin 12V rail, it's gonna be a bit more expansive:

Enermax 420W EG425P-VE SFMA 2.0
Cost: $76.00
Rails: +3.3V@30A, +5V@30A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@18A
Hold Time: 17ms
Cooling: 2x80mm
PFC: No
Mobo: 20pin

I think these 2 psus should suffice?

btw, how do i know if my mobo is 20 or 24 pin?

12-03-2005, 11:29 PM
With the nf4 chipset you shouldn't have to do anything special whilst installing the HDD.
Hook up drive (data/power), install XP disc and boot to it.
Install as normal.

Where this gets confusing is when RAID enters the story.
Windows would not even think of RAIDing on it's own and with only a solo drive I can't figure out where the option is even coming from....

suprafreak6
12-03-2005, 11:32 PM

.
I'm not.
In theory (and in practise, at least with the DFI and Gigabyte nf4 mobos) a SATA device connected through the nvidia chipset does not require the F6 dance.
If you're board differs, then I suppose you'll have to floppy your way to Nirvana.

http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=006322&cid=PS.808

For this PSU, the ratings are as follow:
3.3 V=32A
5 V=32A
12V1=18A
12V2=18A
12Vtotal=32A

LG DVD-+RW dual layer $50

Stealth Case Fan $10

Arctic Sliver 5 thermal paste $10

Questions:
1. I know my PSU is pretty good, but I think it is overkill even if I should be overclocking? Is it too much power?

2. How do I remove the original thermal paste that came with the AMD cpu without scratching the heat sink?

how much thermal paste should I put between the athlon 64 3200+ (sok 939) and the original heatsink that came with it?

Virtualbody1234
12-04-2005, 08:48 PM
1. You cannot have too much power.
2. You can leave the stock thermal pad in place. It works fine (large surface area for heat transfer). If you really need to remove the pad then use your fingernail and some acetone.
3. Fan placement varies from one case to the next. You should already know where it goes when you buy it.

Extra question: A very thin layer.

Just hide the wires around thhe edges,, use tie wraps to keep them in certain places.
Move devices around to get best config of wires too so they're easier to hide and not running across the middle of the case.
