23% of the Scottish population perform at the lowest level of a 5-point scale measuring literacy and a similar proportion perform at the lowest level on numeracy measures.
:O

The International Adult Literacy Study (IALS), in 1997 compared the literacy skills of adults in 25 countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

When all the participating countries are ranked in order of literacy levels, the UK is shown as being in the lower end of the range. This suggests that Scotland would also be in this range.

:D

Fifty percent of the Scottish population are below level three.:shifty:

But to be fair:

Scots perform at the highest levels but also have more people at both the highest and the lowest levels than England and Wales.

I can believe that.

There is something of a "celebration of stupidity" culture in Scotland and the UK generally at the moment.

Do I look bovvered? ... I'm not bovvered...

That means approximately 3.5% are illiterate.

I tried to find the article on The Daily Record, but couldn't. I wanted to check out the article.

The question I had was how did they factor up this number? Was it only among English speakers? Was it everyone? I mean there is approximately 30 million people here that do not speak English.

I heard that the study included 8 million under the age of 2 and several million more that were quite dead:dry:

That is a good point, but I find illiterate peoples' expressions' hard to ...um...read.

My concern is for the illegible.

Are we talking illiterate as in, just canny do it, pas de reading and writing. If that be the case then such a high proportion of the population is quite frightening.

Do you really want to give the vote to chap who can't read a newspaper, or a bus timetable.

Not that it makes you a bad person .... just a stupid one.

With apologies to any illiterates who are having this read to them, obviousement.
