Reg Key Generators.... Why?

I'm still confused by the key generator thing, there seems to be any amount of them available but the majority appear to be pointless :( for instance..
I can get a key gen for a program but u can't use it to log in for online games because some1 has already used it... also you can't install the game with it because the game tells u that the serial does'nt belong to that cd. so am I missing something really big? because unless u can get into the program and change the serial manually I can't see any point in having the key gen anyway??/

Keygens are mainly used for software, like operating systems, and programs which require you to register after a period of time. In theory, and serial number could be used, but I prefer to have my programs registered to me, not Puddthumper of the Year.
