Just looking at the RAM. 128MB ain't gonna be faster than molasses if it'll even work.

It will work even with 128 (thats the minimum). You will want the upgrade disc because its cheaper. You will do a full install with it, but you will have to put your ME disc in when windows XP asks for it. **If you have an OEM disc (dell, gateway, etc..) then you will need the full install disc, as retail XP upgrade discs dont recognize these as real copies. You WILL NOT want to do a upgrade to your os. Save all your files and shit to disc or wherever, and do a fresh install, because upgrades almost always screw something up. Also you will want to format your hard drive and delete all the partitions on it. I see that you have a D partition that probably has a recovery copy of ME on it. Wipe the entire drive out so you only have 1 partition on it. :)

That's what I said about 128MB. But it won't be fun.

this is true. spend a few bucks and buy a 512 stick to compliment your 128 and you will be good, but you can still install it. :)
Oh, and this is assuming you dont have a built in VGA, cuz then you will lose even more ram (I cant be bothered to read ALL your specs :P)

Don't you fileshare? If not then what are you doing on this board?

Small problem with old Compaqs: BIOS is on a hidden partition on the hard drive, not on a chip on the mobo; clearing all partitions would be bad if this is the case here.

Other then your lack of memory, you'll have no problems "upgrading" to WinXP. Just borrow someone's copy of Win98 or ME to use when installing XP.
Microsoft uses them to verify you already have a copy of their O/S. During the install, you will be asked to insert the Win98 or ME disc to verify this. No data is taken from it.

btw, I upgraded an old Compaq Presario(circa 1999) running Win98 and had no problems installing XP on it. Of course, I did borrow a friends full '98 disc and not the crappy restore disc that came with it.

good luck with it.

yes, as long as its a full retail copy, not a oem disc (like dell or gateway) they dont seem to work. :)

If ur going to use Windows XP, NEVER upgrade! Its best to do a full instalation rather than an upgrade (from ME, etc etc). Upgrading leads to lag, and tons of problems. Back up all your personal files then format your harddrive and install Windows XP. Upgrading is NOT the way to go.

EDIT: Also, Windows ME is a bad OS. Dump it.

So you're willing to download Windows ME so that you can purchase an upgrade version of Windows XP home??? Why don't you just download Windows XP Pro? :frusty:

Personally i would stick with ME if i was you, considering you have an old pc and with only 128mb ram. pc booting up time wiil be alot faster using ME and you pc wont struggle as much when you have a few programs open at same time. i have two pcs and have kept with MEe on my old pentium 1gig pc.

hed be better of with win98. ME is not stable in 90% of the cases Ive seen (some will say 100%, but I dont want to offend anyone who still uses it and has it actually working )

Or Windows 2000. But I think the best would be to add more RAM and go with XP.
