Should I install windows customizing stuff as that will take ram, would it eat up the batteries if i install that stuff?

yes, a firewall is necessary. Everything else is just preference. What programs do you use often? What are you using your notebook for?

its not a gaming notebook so its just like a standard notebook to do some work on and searching the web

amd turion ml37
512mb ram + 1gb ram
60gb hd

office 2003 is nice to have. if you don't have it or don't know where to get it, then open office is always a nice alternative.

I use norton internet security 2005 on my desktop and symantec client security 10 on my laptop. I have no problems with the software and LOVE the adblocking/popup blocking.

u will need speedswitch xp

it reduces the speed of ur cpu when ur not gaming or doing major stuff...

for ex.
when im on batter my lappy runs at 518mhz(normal is 1.7ghz, its a athlon 2200+) at all times which gives me 3hours of battery life. and runs the laptop nice and cool.

you can use Windows Firewall, too.
I use ObjectDock, windowblinds and Aquarium Desktop on my laptop, which has the same specs as yours. I also use XP 64 bit edition, which I don't recommend (going to go back to regular old XP soon). I havne't noticed decreased battery life, but then again I got the big 12 cell one.
You won't need speedswitch if you have the Turion chip.
