Hello,
i just bought a new laptop and have movies on it and want to know if it is possible to be able to play my movies on my laptop to my tv. One of my friends connects a svideo to svideo cable from his laptop to his tv. I dont have a s-video output on my laptop. Is there any way possible i can still watch the movies on my laptop through my tv. And if so can someone please explain in good detail the steps to do so. thankx

Your laptop doesn't have an S-video or Composite video output.
(per the Dell website...http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_b120?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~page=2&~tab=viewstab#tabtop)

You will need a VGA to Component video adapter.

I did a quick Google search and found this...http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/kd-vtca2.htm

I'm sure there are others available.

You need an adapter something like this:

http://store1.yimg.com/I/trianglecables-site_1882_22621440

Then you need to find a way to connect the audio as well. Your laptop has headphone jack that can be used for that.

ok i have a vga port on my laptop. So all i need to do is get that vga cable in that picture and connect the other end of the cable which in the picture has a svideo(black) and then that other connector(yellow). And then a y audio cable(ministereo plug to rca)?

No. You wouldn't use the yellow connector at all. Only the S-Video OUT connects to the TV S-Video IN for the video signal.

The audio would be done with another cable from the headphone/speakers out on the laptop to the audio input at the TV.

What is that yellow adapter in this picture for? and when i plug these two to my tv. The yellow one goes into the yellow port of the tv and then of course the s video connector goes in the s video port on the tv?

I have beside me on my desk right now a (y audio cable) which one on end has a headphone jack that fits into my laptops headphone port. then on the othr end of this y audio cable, it has the white and red rca connector to go to the tv. Would this be the right cable to make the audio work?

Also what is the difference is i use the one virtualbody says which is the (vga to svideo-$15.00) compared to the one harrycary said (VGA to Component Video Adapter/Transcoder with VGA Loop Through-$125.00).

If this setup works like when you hook a laptop up to a projector you are going to have to tell the laptop to send the video signal through the vga port and to do that I think you need to press Fn + F8. You may also need to mess around with your screen resolution once you get the image on the tv. Look at this site also

http://hecs.rutgers.edu/projector/proj_direx.htm

Edit: I also found these commands, they activate and deactivate the port.

* FN + F8
* FN + F12
* Ctrl + Alt + <
* FN + D
* Ctrl + Alt + F10

"Holding down the Fn (or FN) key (usually located at the bottom left of your keyboard) while pressing the appropriate function key (F5, F7, F8, etc., at the top of your keyboard) should cycle through several modes (display on PC screen only, on PC and projector, on projector only, etc.) of projecting what is on your screen. The appropriate function key varies from one manufacturer to another."

hmm this seems simple enough. Im gonna try that as soon as i can find a longer VGA to S-video cable. The one that virtualbody showed me ended up only being 1 foot long so im gonna try to find and order a longer one.
Thanks everybody

Or you can get an extension cable and not worry about another adaptor http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002ZPIMI/103-8060161-0347832?v=glance&n=172282

Hello,
I just did a bunch of research on this pc to tv conversion thing and all the forums and all the people who have done it say its not even worth it if your going to use a vga to s video converter because of the bad picture quality you get. They said the best way to go is to buy a video card with a svideo port on it. Is this true?
i have a NVIDIA GeForce 6100 graphics with PCI Express x16 expansion slot and up to 128MB shared video memory; high-definition audio (7.1-channel support)
"http://www.nvidia.com/page/gpumobo_6100-410_features.html"

with a Gateway 19" Flat-Panel TFT-LCD Monitor FPD1960
"http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7229493&type=product&id=1115363750704"

My video card does not have a svideo so i was thinking about upgrading to one that does. Would this be my best option for pc to tv conversion. And also if i do get a new card, i want one that atleast matches the one i have now in quality and also has a svideo port. Anybody have any suggestions on what to get or where to get one?

Thanks

I cant give you suggestions on the video card but others here can, but I can tell you that it is extremely easy to hook your desktop upto the tv with the svideo port. It is really just plug and play at that point.

why would the quailty be bad from vga to svid?

heres a good thread for pc to tv

Admire the collective desire to feed VGA output to S-Video. This is more than a simple plumbing challenge. VGA is, of course, a digitally formatted signal while NTSC, whether composite, S-Video or Rf, is analog. What this requires is a VGA to PAL or NTSC converter. Chipsets designed to perform this function abound since many TV-Tuner and Video-Capture cards (WinTV, AIW ATI Radeon, Zoltrix TV Max, to name a few) exploit this capability to transform analog inputs for digitizing (viewing on VGA) and DVR functionality. If you're really up for the challenge of masking, etching, inserting and soldering components on a PCB along with sufficient testing, the following site has a somewhat dated example of what you're after:
