Your car and he isnt insured under the insurance that you got. Is it illigal if he got pulled over by a cop?

I live in California, USA if that needs to be said ;)

I have insurance so that I can drive anyone's car with third party cover, provided I have their permission. If he has that (if such a thing exists in CA) then all is cool.

If not, it's illegal.

Even if the cop doesn't give a ticket, why risk driving without insurance? If there's an accident, it could cost hundreds of thousands $$$.

Automatic third party cover is a fairly standard part of most policies n'est ce pas. Well, comprehensive policies.

If he needs to drive your car you can have him listed as a named driver for a short time, even a week or two. It wouldn't cost that much. I know chaps who borrow each others cars, say during holidays. That's what they do and it keeps the cover as comprehensive, rather than the other driver just using his third party cover.
