Ok, why are private tracker special?
will I find even better stuff on them, or what?.

For example, for a long time I've been wanting to download
the Jurassic Park movies on DVD (DVD-R), but there are no copies on
the web available,
will a private tracker have it?

private trackers are usually full of people who keep their share ratios at 1:1 or higher and are usually places that you can request a file that you want. There are far less hit and runners, so a torrent usually stays on the tracker longer as opposed to the public sites, where noone really cares if they share the file back, just so long as they get it, so theres no "reward" so to speak for keeping a file alive. And it would be a higher probability that a private tracker somewhere will/may have or can get the DVD you asked about. :) Sometimes a mix of both public and private can be usefull. I have found files on public trackers that i couldnt find on private ones. Its nice to have both options. On public trackers, I will share the file back to 1 ratio, then i jump off. On a private tracker, I will keep the file running as long as I possibly can, sometimes sharing it back to 10:1 or higher. try asking someone on a public tracker to help seed a torrent with 0 peers and 10 leechers.....Its generally not possible.

Well, you are right,
but still, there seems to be some considerated people left in the world,
cus I've noticed that when I upload something, many of the dldrs, keep the torrent
active for quite some time.

Try downloading something from a private tracker, you'll get much better speeds...

I guess it can't hurt to try,
do they charge me to register, or they just watch that I keep a
fair ratio?

wait, is torrentbox.com private?,
cus I believe Im registered with them.

torrentbox is not private. anyone can download their torrents. Thats not to say that there arent good people on torrentbox, but its not a private site.

I dont know of any private sites that charge you to register, That not to say there are not any just that I don't know of any. All of them take donatiions. Private sites are more concerend for security than a open tracker is. the speeds are better because there ratios are tracked.

You should try one out sometime. You might like it.

Most sites that say you have to pay are bogus versions of real torrent sites. Just keep fishing around for an invite you will get one eventually.

If you have a decent upload your speed on a public tracker shouldn't be all that bad, it's all "tick for tock".

The problem I have with private trackers is that because the user base is often so small that unless you are among the first to jump on a torrent it's near impossible to give back as much as you take. Also, on many of the trackers they have a dedicated team of releasers that are the only ones that can upload a torrent to the listings. I many times find myself downloading something just because I can be one of the first to jump on it and seed it back and maybe help my ratio.

It can all be a pain in the ass.

I have a crap upload speed so I occasioly have to keep seeding torrents over night. But you can find files better on them.

My question is why the "invite" system...couldn't they have new users upload what they have to a certain amount which would them qualify them to download.

Im downloading LOTRBFME 2 from torrentspy..

My ratio is now like 20000............. download is 1 kb/s
upload is like 30 kb/s

thats why I hate public torrents.....its all hit & run..no more seeding

Do these private torrents do any kind open registration without the need for an invite?

vonmeth
03-01-2006, 03:38 AM
When they first start up they are usually public, and as they grow more in numbers, they will close it off to an invite system.

To the person that was talking about not being able to get a good ratio, try creating your own seed.

I'm sure something on your computer has not been seeded on that specific site.

It really is not all that difficult and most sites have well detailed tutorials on how to do it.

private torrents usually get a lot more speeds with quality uploaders with very impressive lines, so the delivery time to more people is a lot less with private servers, u arent allowed to hit and run because you have to maintain a certain ratio (the amount of download=amount of upload).

most private servers have a 0day pre-time which means your the first ones to get it :> some private servers only host torrents on their tracker up to a specific amount of days, then it gets deleted.

so some private torrents won't have 1 or 2 year old stuff whereas public ones might. Other privaet servers also have a request system, where you can request old stuff, but usually the 0day pre-time servers dont.

heres a few trackers im personally on, and can speak from experience:

www.torrentbytes.net (no request system - torrents stay only for 21 days)
-quality tracker
-very private, no invite system
-very fast speeds
-active admins and support
-variety of torrents (PS2,xBOX games, dvd-r,xvids,XXX,music...etc)
-0day release tracker

www.torrentit.com (request system)
-request system
-lots of old AND new stuff

www.torrentleech.org
-quality releases (VERY FAST PRETIMES)
-speeds are decent too
-a lot more variety to choose from

(*all these trackers below and above have something in common, they all require/stronly advise you to maintain a certain ratio, 1)
---
some other ones are

scenetorrents
supertorrents
bitme.org
bitmetv.org

try to look for some quality ones, some sites have a really tight sign up, such as torrentbytes, sometimes its luck :> and some generous people might pop you a few invites too.

hope this helped

Yeah, basically its just a tighter community where everyone helps each other out. I want to get a registration at a private tracker because i get twice the speed i get on public ones.

Private trackers are the best except for there closed registration. Its impossibleto get on moste of them. Aside from that you get the best quality movies and incredibly fast download speeds. Private all the way

I'm somewhat of a newbie to whole BitTorrent scene. Quick question...is there any precident to the RIAA going after people who are registered at private sites? I know they could get you no matter what if they really want to, but have they ever gone after a private site and used the list of registered users to go after individuals?

Private trackers have more files and better speeds.

phalex
03-03-2006, 12:22 AM
i'd take a good private tracker over a good public one any day. not only is the speed better because there are less hit-n-runs as people care about their ratio, you are much more invisible to "the man" on private trackers. not that you're impossible to spot, but you're certainly much more secure than on a public one.

oh and always stay away from downloading NEW stuff from public trackers. you know, when it hits 500 seeders / 5,000 leechers.. it just gives a pretty list of IPs... the easiest way to get caught..

rguinn
04-27-2006, 06:57 AM
Private trackers are better because its users are held accountable for their actions, in terms of bandwidth. members simply have more initiative to seed.

the irony is that it's easy to get excellent upload on a public tracker, but it means nothing because ratios aren't generally kept track of. I WISH I got such good uploads on private trackers.

Theif

Private trackers are best known for thier speeds. Because they have small userbase and very few hits on a particular file. so very hard to keep healthy ratio

Dedalus^
04-27-2006, 08:22 PM
they also have a lot more to choose from. Especially if they let any user upload...

because every use would want to upload as much as they can to maintain a good ratio. So they upload any files that may be of the slightest interest to anyone.

speeds are better on private trackers. Ur also a lot safer on private trackers. A few reasons I think this is so are:

1. there are too many private trackers, with all their own torrents that aren't uploaded to other sites for people to look at or connect to on their trackers

2. Private trackers are, in many cases, much more difficult to sign up for, so fewer RIAA/MPAA people will be able to get onto them

And someone earlier said that ur not safe on public ones because of a list of IP addresses. This isn't true, since the RIAA/MPAA don't sue people based on IP addresses. It's not substantial evidence. What they have to do is connect to the torrent and let you connect to them, and then thats enough evidence.

There are ways around this, like using programs like PeerGuardian2 and Protowall with Blocklist Manager

Private tracker do as people already have said much better speed. Files also stays well seeded longer since there is often a ratio system in place. It is often minutes compared to hours/days in download time.

Focused tracker with only torrents for tv, poker, music etc do often have content that public trackers do not.

I will say that most private trackers require a 5 GB dl and a certain share ratio .500 or more to not get banned after the first 2 weeks. So being smart about your first couple of downloads can either make or break your time in that private tracker. You might have to download somethings that you dont normally watch or use just to get the ul's. Oh yeah and most are porn free :w00t: Overall private is the way to go for sure!!

I found private sites to be phenomenally better than the public ones. Amazing speeds, great variety, and high integrity files... compared to that, alot of the public sites are almost trashy with what can go where... you might get the same file, but it seems you are more likely to get the file properly tagged and formatted at a private site.

wow, this thread is so freakin old

i have an idea:

We should make a n00bie faq/sticky that answers the question: Why are private trackers preferred over public trackers?

this way...

people don't have to ask the same question over and over and over and over and over and over and over...

you get the picture...

AGAIN

seems like everything someone visits FST bittorrent section, he/she always asks this question; it's getting annoying... I'M SPEAKING FOR ALL who are as annoyed as me

just had to get it off my chest :D
