There is a knob on my powersupply that allows you to control the fan speed...is it safe to turn it completly off? Not while im gaming or anything just while its sitting there with a few apps open such as aim utorrent and wmp? my computers temps are all below 30* C which is good isnt it?

No

Power supplies generate heat. No matter what you're doing with your PC.

Heat damages components. Eventually something will fail in your power supply

Lower the fan speed but don't completely shut it down.

you learn to live with the noise, my computer is about 3 fans away from hovering.

The fan on my 6600GT is the only somewhat loud fan in my pc, it was annoying at first but im fine with it now.

Same, all of my case fans are volt-modded 7volt so they're all quiet...the power supply 120mm fan runs slow and speeds up if the pwoer supply gets hot (i'm guessing, it's never gotten hot that i could tell :)), and my CPU fan is controlled by SpeedFan, when the temp is below 35degrees it runs at 50% speed which is pretty much silent, and the only time it does go over 35 is under load. :)

maybe Im strange but I cant sleep in pure silence. I need a fan running year round to sleep. The tornados in my pc would suffice, but I have all of my pcs in a different room, so I sleep with an hepa air cleaner running on high  but for the sake of staying on topic, you should never turn that fan off. you may wake up to a fire :o (exaggerated :P)

Dont forget on a really hot day you are going to have a high chance of frying your motherboard if you forget to turn on your fan.

lol you think that's bad...

I have 4 fans... really loud ones too. 3 high rpm 80mm ones: 2 back and 1 front.
Also another 60mm fan which I found and modded onto the side right on top of the video card and I swear it's the loudest fucker you'll ever hear. All that plus I have my case close to the sleeping side of my bed (it's the only place I can put it with my desk beside my bed). It's so goddamn loud at first you'd think a banshee is attacking when you wake up in the middle of the night...if you can get to sleep first of course. goddamn Ventec fans... :frusty:
