Shocking Laptop

I am the proud owner of an eMachines M6809 notebook, long out of its warranty repair.

The other day I got off the couch and the first thing I touched was the mouse/ directional pad thingy on the notebook right below the keyboard. I was shocked by static electricity right when I was touching the pad. The pad never worked again, and I am assuming my shock fried it.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
Any guesses on how much it will cost to repair this?

That is a weird problem...And I doubt it would be worth it to repair such an old laptop anyways.

Since when is a Mobile AMD Athlon™ 64 3200+ such an old laptop?

Btw, I have no idea how much it would cost to replace the touchpad.

Probly the best option. Much cheaper to just get a nice mouse than to try and repair the touchpad, afaik.

my experiance from fiximg my laptop is that the touch pad screws into the bottom of the top piece of plastic. if you could order that part provided that is what is dead and not something farther down the line, or even get an identical dead laptop for cheap, you might be able to swap it out if you feel confident taking your laptop apart. I can't see it being expensive if you do the work yourself. talk to tech support and see if ou can order singal parts.
