I use uTorrent and I have 1MB broadband whenever im downloading anything my web browsing gets very slow, even when the downloads are really slow.
Any advice?

limit your upload speed to under 80% max

yup vargas tells the truth upload speed lowers your bandwith so takes long time to browse the web.

Also make sure you haven't set your bittorrent client to try to use too many network connections.

Lower the upload like Vargas said should help. If not, you might also want to lower amount of connections your client establishes.

I've had good experiences with BitSpirit.
Use that one to limit your upload speeds

I foudn that even after pausing downloads and uploads my browser was slow, I had to close my client before I could actually surf the web as the pages used to time out.

Well you have an a-simetric line. that means your upload effects your download > which means you will surf slower.
Try using NetLimiter for limiting upload... ;)
