My computer seems a bit glitchy at the moment and i can't help thinking i've got more prcesses running than i should. There are 42 running in the task manager

I've done a hijackthis log and it didn't say anything was unsafe on hijackthis.de :(

The only thing i did recently was update my graphics drivers. I have a radeon 9700 pro on a abit nf7-s motherbard. The last few times i've shut down a program .net microsoft thing doesn't shut down properly and i get one of them end now pop-ups

Also i only 512 of ddr ram. Could it be the programs are eating more and more ram

Thanks in advance :D

I have 29 right now, and I think that less than 30 is Ok. When it becomes more then 30 its time to do something, very often a reinstall of windows :)

look through your processes list, and any processes that you don't know what they are, look them up on google. then uninstall/stop any process that you don't really need

PROCESSES - Total BASICS
You can see what processes are running on your pc by opening the task manager.(Ctrl-Alt-Delete)
In relation to the Services and StartUp programs the CORE system processes(+ internet access) that need to be running for Windows to function are:
csrss.exe
ctfmon.exe (do not disable if u need different languages-quoted from Slimy)
explorer.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
svchost.exe (x4)
spoolsv.exe (printer...)
System
System Idle Process
Winlogon.exe
(+your firewall and antivirus programs...)
if any of the above .exes are named slightly different or are located outside of the system32 folder there is a big likelihood they are viruses.

so.....since I have 37 processes running, I should just reformat/reinstall?
please.
go smoke that shit somewhere else
they are all legitimate processes, and my PC suffers not from them
in fact, I've had mine up to 42 or so with no ill effect

@100% - that guide was posted in 2004, some things have changed since then

@effy - if the processes are legitimate, but your PC still lags,
then, yeah, trim down on the processes
but not just because it's over a certain number, that's pish
if you go ending processes/startup entries all willy-nilly just to get it under, say, 30,
you may not like the results

-edit-
ahhh ffs...I just saw that you updated your gfx drivers
try rolling them back to the last stable build

Currently running 22 processes...slightly more than normal.

Feeling fat and bloated.
Could be that time of the month.
