I like the System tweaks and cache cleaner/ regcleaner type programs the best . Anything that makes it easy ,theres no excuse not to perform maintenance on your computer.

Just run a spyware proggy every month or so when i remember, and have diskeeper defragmenting at night at 3am while i'm asleep.

I'm the only one that uses my comp nowadays, so i don't really need to worry about spyware and viruses all that much. :D (still check for 'em, but not worried about it :P).

Tried TuneUp Utilities 2006 (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=111752&highlight=tuneup) yet? Great App.

Yep one of my fav.'s like Crapcleaner , Diskeeper or JV16 Power Tools . But some of the best Maint. programs are free too . :) Its nice to know how to do it manually but who has the time and you miss so many crap files .

Someone who says they they don't do maintenance must not update their Antivirus or spyware programs either .

Speaking of Antivirus, I've seen atleast 4 computers now running a copy of Norton Antivirus with an outdated licence (OLD definitions!).
Each one of those people told me their Anti-virus protects them! What a mess!!!

I put NOD32 (10000000+ days license patch lol) on two of them...uninstalling the dead copy of Norton. The user obviously had some trial crap going on there.

maybe every fortnight i run jv16 and tuneup utilities and if i remember, maybe once a month on adaware and spybot and ccleaner. And when i empty my pc out a little after weeks/months of downloading do i run perfectdisk. I'm not really lazy but i'm not obsessed with maintenance. But i do feel good after doing some maintenance...dunno why lol.

I don't usually use antispyware programs to catch spyware and such. Instead, I regularly check processes, startup list, and alll the various folders where spyware likes to hide. anything that doesn't belong gets removed. every once in a while I run an anti spyware program to make sure that I am not missing anything. If I run into any problem that will take over half an hour to fix, my partions and such are set up so that I can start my unattended Windows install and reinstall.

I have a list of maintenance tasks that I like to perform at least once a month. (I have nearly finished refining the list)

Adaware and Spybot, Hi-Jack This, Scandisk, Defrag, AVG full test, then I compress my registry and back it up.

One thing that many of you did not mention was what about backups. I backup up all of my files to CDRW's. I have an old computer which I use to reformat the CDRW's on. My main documents, eg Word, Access and personal data etc I backup once a week. The rest eg music, jpegs and vids I backup up on a rolling basis.

I do not like the XP version of Scandisk that you run from My Computer, C drive, Properties, Tools etc. You seem to have very little control over it. Is there another version of Scandisk ? or Chkdsk for XP, or have I missed something.

Great Thread.

@digman, you can't run Chkdsk in windows xp you have to do it at boot , is that what you mean ? I like Diskeeper for that reason , when you do a boot defrag you can set up chkdsk aswell .

I 'm trying to remember I program I use to use to check the disk ,think it's called Norton Windoctor . Mabye give that a try ? Found it a Program called Norton Disk Doctor . :)

@twisterx , tools are available to make our computeing life easier be it just clearing cache or cleaning cookies, defragging what ever . To say you don't use them is BS .

Well i don't know what i can say. I dont have firewall, antivirus, anit spyware and i haven't defragged since i reformated my system and i haven't cleaned it up even once. It still runs great.

I tweak it but i don't do maintence.

NAV scans twice a week in the middle of night and I run AD-Aware about once per month. That's it unless I need to run something else, in which case it's probably HiJackThis!

That system seems to work well b/c I've had this PC for about 3.5 years and I've never reformatted. :lookaroun

That's about it really.

I used to Format/Reinstall WinXP annually. I felt that nothing does a good enough job of "cleaning" my system. Then I discovered BartsPE. It is a boot disk that allows you to perform real maintenance of Windows without running Windows. You run it in a Preinstall-Enviroment. It's much better than running in safe-mode. Just Google "Bart's PE". You won't be sorry.

BTW: it's free. Nothing to loose.
