I was wondering what the max line of sight range on wireless networking is. I would like to network two locations that are aproximitly 1000' apart. would this be possable?

most likely you wll need a repeater but, you could do it with a wrt54g with hacked firmware

1000' should be no problem with a pair of high-gain directional antennas (up to 10 miles with good ones). Could be a bit pricey though.

Or you could try the cantenna idea.

ya, basiclly, my mom and my grandma would like to network in order to share a highspeed connection. it is almost exactly 1000 feet between the two houses, with a direct line of sight across our pasture. since I don't have much experence with wireless networking, I figured that I would ask some other people.

read towards the bottom for the "cantenna" idea - http://www.filesharingtalk.com/vb3/showthread.php?p=1293846#post1293846

ya, I know what it is, I just would need to be really sure that it is going to reach to convince my mom that it is worth spending money on. maybe I can borrow a wireless router and link up a system to prove it is worth buying the proper equipment

Is it possible to run a cat5 cable?

Hmmm... 1000ft is kind of far.

I've seen a wok used as a dish: http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/

Isn't it recommended to keep cat5 under 300-something feet due to signal loss?

it would technicly be possable to use cat5 if you used repeaters, but that involves also running a power cord and digging 1000ft of trench- wireless seems a hell of a lot easier

Although it is way over the spec you can get a 305m (1000ft) box of cat5, put an rj45 plug on boths ends and it will work. In this case you would not have crosstalk from other cables that is a factor in the maximum distance. Buy screened cat 5 (STP) rarther than the usuall unscreened stuff (UTP).

Wireless over 300m with no obstacles and no other wifi networks around should not be a problem. This fresnel effect calculator (http://www.zytrax.com/tech/wireless/calc.htm) says you need at least one end at least ten feet above the ground.
