Only when it's funny to do so

I think you should just use it a little because for some reason I link the phrase with one of Jonno's fabulous 'happened to me at work /in town/on the shitter today' threads.

Is it funnier when it's a true story, or when you're making it up.

I miss Jonno's fabled "tales of the Shitter' :(

That's funny, I sort of used it as a "This Is Not A Rod" indicator.

Is it funnier when it's a true story, or when you're making it up.
When it's an utterly fantastical tale of unrelenting fabrication.

That's a bit harsh, he may have made stuff up, but not quite a Shitter.

Colonel Asda, he's a Shitter. Fact.

when you are telling a true story that people might think is fiction, to clarify that it actually happened.

I use it when I am telling the truth, usually something really banal or uninteresting. True story.
