PC just shuts off

I have this computer, and it just started shutting off. When it shuts off, pressing the power button does nothing, it wont come back on. If I let it set for a while (5 minutes or so), it will turn back on, but it wont last for more than 5 minutes or so. Does this sound like a failing PSU to you guys? It does to me, but I wanted a second (or third, or fourth :P) opinion.

*edit* It will only come back on after I unplug it for a few seconds, then plug it back in.

Sounds like the PSU to me.
Do you have other PSUs to try, or try unhooking some things from the computer (cd drives, extra hard drives, extra fans) to see if it stays on like that.

unfortunatly I dont have another psu to try. I messed with it some more, and now it will only give enough power to spin the cpu fan lightly, then nothing. A friend has some psu's I will try later. Thanks for your thoughts :)

Ya try the PSU from your friend, and post back here. Let us know what happened.

mine used to do that too, but it was way simpler than a PSU failing, it was simply the 24pin power connector that was loose :P I noticed that the computer shut off everytime I shook the chassie ^^

If you can get it going again then go into the BIOS to check the temps.

I considered using speedfan to check temps, but the pc wont even power on, so I kinda figured that overheating was ruled out. :P I know what you are thinking VB, cuz I thought the same thing. I suppose its all still a possibility, but I havent gotten the psu's to narrow it down yet.

Given those symptoms I would suspect thermal shutdown before PSU.
Sounds like overheating>shutdown>cool off>restart>shutdown.

By all means, try a different PSU but also check the condition of your heatsink/fan.

yep, thermal shutdown. had an old hp pc back in nam and the hsf was shit and would do exactly what urs is doing. time for new hsf and some good thermal paste.

I had this once. Having to unplug from the wall was the clue. New PSU fixed it.

Just to help anyone who may need the info...........It was the power supply. A new one fixed it right up. :)
