can;t open word document

I can't open my word document on my main pc. It still works on my laptop, but I need it to work wherever I need it to because its an assignment I need to be able to access at college.
This is the error message I get

Word experienced an error trying to open the file.
Try these suggestions
*check the file permissions for the document or drive
*make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space
*open the file witht eh text recovery converter.

whats the problem? I have 699mb on my hard drive left. I can't do the recover work because i will lose all the important diagrams, I know this because i made a copy of the file and tried it. please help me

Save the document as a different format on the laptop and try again.

its ok i fixed it, copied the contents of the file into a brand new document and saved it.

works now. thanks anyway
