http://images.google.ca/images?q=tbn:V248-V2gFHkhTM:news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Microsoft-anunta-Windows-Media-Player-11-2.jpgTaking aim at the dominance of Apple Computer, Microsoft this week is launching a test version of a revamped jukebox aimed at trying to knock iTunes down a peg.

Microsoft plans to make the beta of Windows Media Player 11 available for free to Windows XP users on Wednesday, but some consumers got an earlier look by scooping up a portable device optimized for the new jukebox.

The new media player is Microsoft's latest attempt to unseat Apple, whose sales of both music and digital music players have consistently outpaced those of competitors.

You had to become a forum moderator because we've turned on moderation for news posts to help stop spamming (some people are signing up, posting spam in the news so it will show in the front page, then leaving).

Anyway, I tried this and it does work pretty nice...although adding songs takes forever.

You know what's stupid?
Although designed for Vista, WMP 11 Beta is not 64 bit compatable!

Thanks a lot MS.

WMP 11 (Beta) = A+

I really like it! I was skeptical at first, but I got use to it and the song - search thing is GREAT! Especially since I have 4,987 songs. And WMP 10 plugins and info seemed to carry over...I love it already.

Yea the MS site version calls home to verify as well (and doesn't install if it can't validate).

Pirate friendly versions do seem to be appearing via P2P networks though but you may have to sift through to find a working one (and do a bit of digging to find out what's been done to neatralise them I guess).

I have it on right now on my taskbar, currently is using 15,144 K mem with about 0-5 CPU. I dunno it seems to run my computer a little slower when multitasking, but I just lowered its priority.

The first Windows Media Player 11 Beta was released on Microsoft's site today. The new version carries a new user interface, better interconnectivity with portable devices and handhelds, and comes bundled with the URGE music purchase system from MTV. If you don't happen to like URGE, you can choose to not have a store at all, or you can choose one of the following after loading the list from Microsoft:
Audible
FYE
Live365
Movielink
MSN Music

etc. Full list on Microsoft's Windows Media Player 11 page (Click View)This release is not secured by Windows Genuine Advantage, but that shouldn't matter, seeing as to how you guys are all legal Windows XP users.
This release is only supported on Windows XP, and specifically SP2.

OH.......MY......GOD!!

Did you read the "URGE" licensing agreement that comes with this thing!?

Well I did, and my eyes just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

Then I took a few deep breaths and deleted WMP11

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=61

No.......THANK.....You. EVER!

(And people think this Government phone thing is bad.......wait till they see this!)

All the things happening all around, and I feel like I am watching my country slowly become a police state. I have ALWAYs been the earliest of early adaptors, (first walkman, first portable cd players, first portable lcd tvs etc) but 99% of this new technology/spyware Leaves me cold.

Completely, totally, entirely and even angrily uninterested. I will NOT be buying it, unless someone finds a way to turn it off :(

1. The Gov't phone thing is scarey and so is all the monitoring. I agree. 2. URGE sucks, the agreement is shyt. I agree. :( Good find, too bad it wasn't good news though...I'm still keepin' my WMP 11 and I've always declined URGE and all agreements. I don't need a music store. ........:whistling .......:shifty:

Wow. I have legit Windows XP Media Center Edition, and WMP11 can't install because I don't have rollup 2 installed......
but for some crappy reason, rollup 2 cant be installed onto my computer.
Apparently it has to do with how they installed the OTHER updates... AUTOMATICALLY. Sigh, microsoft.

well, so far wmp11 if fine for me. actually, i kinda like it better than that of wmp10. wmp10 would stall on me sometimes. not the video, or music, just the player if that makes sense. anyway, this player has yet to do that and that is what i'm looking for. as for that urge crap, well, i'll let u ppl who still buy stuff take advantage of that. also, my ver of wmp11 is wga free! my only gripe as of now is that wmp still can't play bin files & they've done away with aspect ratios. which is pretty gay. meh, hail vlc! thx.
