EPSON Stylus Photo 900 is a photo printer that can also print directly on printable CDs/DVDs along with the normal paper stuff. The price isn't bad but has anyone ever tried printing directly on a CD-R that is not specifically printable like Sony or TDK?

Not probable from what I gather. The printable cd's are coated with what they refer to as "duff coating" which allows the cd to take hold of the ink and settle nicely. Because of the ink-jet technology you are limited only to the CD/DVD blank printable media when dealing with this type of hardware.

Regular cdr's are not coated in that fashion and because it is an ink-jet printer, the ink would merely sit on top of the cdr giving the effect as water would on a waxed surface. ;)

Sony, Maxell and Verbatim make printable cd's.............probably not the answer you were hoping for but I hope this helps in some fashion.

EDIT:
Primera and Sony (Taiyo Yuden white tops) were found to be the best printable media (very good colors, high brightness and shine)
