What happens when you get banned?

Do they give you a message/email or something? Or does your login name just stop working? I think I may have been banned but I don't know. I can't visit a site that I used to go to.

When you login you cant access anything and a message says your banned and if noted a reson as to why.
Thats just general as sites may ban differently including banning your addy or even ranges at times...
