Hey guys i just got a new HP laptop that came along with preinstalled software and has a 12GB (on an 80gb harddrive) of partiotion filled with these i guess. It said on the manual that installing a retail version OS might result in an unresponsive system... I would really like to know if installing windows xp professional over the windows xp home that came with the laptop, could cause some negative effects to it.

Also lets i were to return the laptop within 14 days, could i void my return to the retailer if they found out i installed a brand new os ?? TiA.

The first thing I would do with such a lappy (or desktop, for that matter) would be to killmbr, reclaim the entire hard drive and put a plain vanilla copy of Windows on it.

I just yesterday worked on a one day old HP laptop (he couldn't figure out how to turn on the wireless and the good folks at Office Depot hadn't a clue) and at startup the poor baby had 74 processes running.
When he left, not only was the wireless on (there is a switch on the front R/H side) but was down to 31 processes and McAfee was totally gone.

I don't understand what the manufacturers are thinking- why garbage up the performance of your product with unnecessary and rude crap?
Yeah I know, AOL, McAfee et. al. pay them to put their ads on your new desktop but even still....

could i void my return to the retailer if they found out i installed a brand new os
Almost certainly.
If you are uncertain about keeping the PC don't do anything till the return period is over.
Try to decide if you like it enough to bear the burden of self reliance re: maintenence.
The second you install a new OS you're on your own as far as they're concerned.
Not that they warranty the software anyway.

There should be no problem installing Windows XP or any other OS on it.

I would recommend since its a laptop getting a copy of...

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah i just installed the os today, because the laptop would refuse to boot after i did a system recovery. So i could either return/replace it to the retailer after the deducted some of the money or go ahead and delete the partiotions and install windows.. I decided to go right ahead and install windows and delete the recovery partiotions. I found out the hardway on HP tech phone support that they dont warrant the laptop when OS is replaced. Fucking c*nts, no wonder this laptop was comparably cheap, with all the ads/offers they stuffed on it. If it comes time to replace this i'll have to make a good excuse if the evercomes, which i hope not..

BTW i saved over 25Gb of hard drive space by reinstalling windows.. Well i learned my lesson now, next time when i buy a laptop, wait and see if i like it, and never let the manufacturer or retailer know i installed a new os..
