rap - the reason being that hiphop is the best form of exressin in music, oviosly there is shit hiphop which tends to get more exposure to none hiphop fans e.g. 50 cent, but if you were to listen to the likes of talib kweli, mos def, nas and other knowlagable rappers, you will see rap is not a music type it is a form of life

Silly question really.

Why limit your musical tastes by only liking one or the other.I like both as much,it just depends on my mood.

I hear alot of people saying RAP is crap but if you take your blinkers off you might be surprised.

Music is music thats all.

how can you say rap is just talking, dumbfucks! have you never heard of rhyming patterns

anyway, go ahead and live life with ignorance, see where it gets you

Ill tell ya why its not music

wheres the melody???
how can we write a score for it????
what notes does the vocals use???
what key do they sing in????
what dynamics has the vocalist and instrument have????
wheres the solos???
wheres the harmonies????
wheres the chorus?????
Where are the guitars ???
where are the drums????
where is any stringed arrangment????

all of this is what music is and rap has nothing of the kind

djhothands
05-04-2003, 02:31 PM
 you have got to be the dumbest fuck i have ever seen!

theres a melody in most hiphop songs
they dont sing in a key becasue they 'rap'
theres plent of choruses in rap
and as fot guitar , drums and strings, well i think you will find they are the most heavily used instruments in hiphop

and anyway why should your questions define 'music' there is no set path for music, its about creativity not sticking to your guide to muisc, the limits are endless, maybe oneday you will see that

A melody??????????? where???????????????? its talk melody is singing not talking fuck man if melody is talking then we all are brilliant!!! that means we are practicly singing everytime we open up our mouths

U should look up what a chorus is too

and no there are no guitar and drums in mozart, however it is music lsiten to all the stringed instuments and all the orchestra arrangments it is pure genious

Skillian
05-04-2003, 02:42 PM
1. Melody is NOT singing.

2. No, YOU should look up what a chorus is.

3. Either your definitions say music has to have guitar or drums, so Mozart isn't music, or it only needs to fulfil one of those criteria in which case rap easily does that and is therefore music. Which is it?

This level of deliberate baiting is getting to be a habit from you Adthomp. Did you not get enough attention as a child?? Listing all the musical terms you know is not going to deflect the fact that you're pretty ignorant about the subject!!
Personally I like both forms of music although Hip-Hop definately edges it for me.

You said rap isn't music, and thats's what everyone got annoyed about. Hip hop fans have to always put up with people expressing that very narrow minded opinion, so we tend to put our point across pretty vehemently.

Noone's gonna care if you just say you prefer rock, but you have to put up a big list of why it shouldn't even be considered music! There's no respect in that.

Like soopaman, N£MO, and other hip hop fans on this forum, I also listen to rock music, so we are more than capable of respecting that point of view. But your opinions on rap just plain suck, we all know that by now, so just don't reply on this sort of thread, or be a little more open when you write your replies.

well said :D
there are a lot of narrow minded people out there who consider rap music as black people (not intended as racism) who talk about killing people and selling drugs
you have to listen to the music to appreciate that it's an artform in it's own right

Human Beatboxing??

Seriously, I don't think it's a case of what one form of music has or hasn't got. They BOTH have their own merits, I thought that had been expressed pretty well by Skillian (to name but one!), obviously I was mistaken. They are different styles of music and have different things that they bring to the "proverbial" table. I love HIP-HOP, I like it more than ROCK so I rarely post in ROCK threads. If I do, it wouldn't be to slate ROCK as a genre. There are good and bad artists in all genres of music. If you woke up to that fact you'd be less ignorant. :P

I'd heard it was the biggest selling genre of music, globally, as well. Can't remember where I heard it though, I think it was on a music industry documentary on the TV. Although I'm a BIG Hip-Hop fan it suprised me at the time, but I suppose they wouldn't have said it if there wasn't some truth behind the statement.

As for the "variety" question: It's been answered before in this topic. I can't think of one genre of music that doesn't have some variety within it. Rap has a lot of Regional/National variety: British Hip-Hop (London Posse,Etc) sounds completely different to West Coast "Gangsta" Rap. Same as Black Sabbath sound different to Sonic Youth - they're both in the same genre of music(Rock) but have differing sounds. Classical music is another case in point!! You could go on ad-infinitum on the subject of musical variety. All forms of music have variety you'll just have to live with that Adthomp - Sorry.

If a musical genre DIDN'T have any variety it wouldn't survive very long. Hip-Hop has been around for 25 years and it has done pretty well for itself so far!! If it was stale and without variety it would've died ages ago. Long may it's success continue!! :D

Rock kicks ass. Rap is ruining our culture. It teaches kids bad vocab (hoes, bitches, sluts, pimps etc..) and makes kids feel that smoking weed and getting laid everynight is a good thing (not saying it isnt ;) BUT still.. Some kids actually do think it)

so just run it by me again, i must be really, really stupid.
why, in your greatly valued opinion, is rap not considered music?
by your rules, i can say that rock isn't music, it's just some guys with guitars.
by your rules, rock=guys with guitars, rap=guys with guns who talk

music is people who use instuments and use there voice as an instrument which Rock falls into that catogry

Rap nor Techno does pressing a button on a machine is not considered music or talking

amphoteric88
05-09-2003, 07:50 AM
so rap doesn't use instruments then?
and how exactly do you explain "using their voice as an instrument" then?
an instrument could be a triangle or a tuba, what kind of voice sounds like a triangle?
or am i missing the point? do you mean melodic like an instrument?
if so, and you think rap is not "melodic", i suggest you go away and listen to some rap before you comment again.
plus, some of the rock i've heard doesn't exactly show off the singer's voice like an orchestra, in fact, a lot of the stuff i've heard is screaming and shouting.

edit: the spelling in your avatar is wrong, adthomp, it should be "wonder"

lol, rock singers have to get the right key. i wonder if that's a joke or not.
why do you have to be able to write the pitch of the voice in a score?
i like the way you also ignorantly stereotype all rap artists to be gangsters who call women bitches and shoot people on drive by's all day long.
a simple question, have you ever tried to rap? download an instrumental of a rap song, something pretty slow and simple, like Eminem - My Name Is, print out the words and try to rap along. i don't think you'll get very far.
download some of tupac's greatest hits, listen to them, try and make it through the "agony".

What have clothes got to do with it??

Don't Rock fans dress a certain way?? They do where I live. The "fabbies" ( our name for them  ) wear insanely baggy jeans, wooly hats, hoodies, baseball caps, skateboard type trainers, bandanas, etc. They are undeniably influenced by Hip-Hop culture because they dress almost exactly the same as the Hip-Hop kids. There has been a direct correlation between youth culture/music/fashion for nearly 60 years!! If you saw me in the street you wouldn't guess I was a BIG Hip-Hop fan. Would you judge me by my clothes or my music? Does it matter??

By the way, wearing your jeans/whatever "low down" came about because if, when you were growing up, your parents couldn't afford to get you new clothes you'd have to pull your jeans down so that they weren't at "half-mast"!! Then wear a baggy T-Shirt to cover your belt/arse.

If in an awards ceremony an artist "thanks God" then that's up to them. Freedom of speech and beliefs and all that. If an artist was a Muslim and thanked Allah would you criticise them for that, Adthomp?? Why don't you just join the fucking Nazi party and then, one day, maybe you could make everyone do what you want, wear what you want, listen to what you want and think what you want??? :P

You are, AGAIN, being deliberately inciteful Adthomp, what's the deal?? Are you trying to impress with your knowledge of musical terminology?? Or your horrendous spelling?? :P

I respect both Rock and Rap, but i think these terms cover too wide a musical spectrum to be judged or pitted against each other. Rock has borrowed from Rap influences over the years and vice-versa. We know have Rap-Rock crossover bands, which just shows that the music we listen to is changing and growing all the time, which can only be a good thing.

The problem is that most people who listen to rap are clueless about music.

People that listen to rock often play an instrument, have some musical theory and know a little of older bands and all that. they also are more inclined to listen to other style of music.

People that listen to rap often play no instrument, have no musical theory (most cant even tell when jay-z sings girl girls girls he's completly out of tune and that everytime a rapper tries to sing he is... they dont realise it...) and they know nothing about older music. Most of them dont know that a lot of the rap beats are stolen from older rock songs. When they hear the original they're like "yall dogg tha shit is wack dude". also i havent met someone that listens to rap that also has a couple of jazz cd for exemple. They only listen to rap which makes their musical knowledge very limited in every way.

Bling bling I like rock best. Only place rap is ok is in a club or something like that, but even for dancing theres way better music.
