Could it be that this movie isn't released yet? Oh my sarcasm reaches out to slap the villiage idiots. We need to build a bigger village. The file is a fake. Common sense my friend. :)

If you have the correct codec to watch the film, then you can view in .avi preview. ;)

What are you talking about? You can't copy a .dat file to your desktop while downloading? You certainly can't open it with WMP. Are we on the same page here? <_<

1) It's not possible to tamper (ex. copy, move, rename) a file while a program is using it.
2) Is that smilie supposed to threaten people?

Well? anyone going to try it?

Ive just done it with rear window (Hitchcock).

I didnt realise you could view while dl in avipreview, came from kazaa and found prog myself, then its just trial and error

Not that it matters to me, but the arguement was whether you could open a kazaa .dat file in WMP, which you cannot. You can use .dat view, that's it.

If you could open a partial download with a simple windows program that everyone owns, then why would they have designed Datview?

That's the point of the avipreview. No need to copy a movie's contents, just select the dat and play in avipreview.

Oh Christ, now I see what you are talking about.

VCDs or VideoCDs have a .dat file which contains the data for the movie. You can open this file with WMP and some other types of software.

The file we were talking about here, is also a .dat file, but its a kazaa data file, sorta like a temp file, until the download is completed. While they have the same extension, they are very different things. Use can use Datview to open a partially downloaded .dat file, and view it, to see if it named correctly.

For a second, I thought maybe i'd smoked too much pot.   :)

Manny Calavera
05-05-2003, 01:45 AM
Im smoking skunk myself

the fact remains i can drag a .dat from my shared folder to my desktop, copy it and open it with wmp, some work with powerdvd also. once your codecs are installed your media players should recognize ;) this works with vcd svcd avi and wmv(?)

Um, it works. You can copy any. dat file while it's downloading to another folder. I didn't know you could open it with virtualdub but you can as well. It doesn't work for me though in WMP or Zoom Player, even if I rename the extension to .avi.

edit: Maybe it's the skunk that helps it work... ;)

You were proven wrong when I figured out that we were talking about two different things.

What have you proven?

This temp file .dat is basically just an image of the finished avi, mpeg or whatever and some files can be opened with wmp without renaming. It see's the files index and displays the complete running time, when it runs out of data you get an error message and it shuts.

Ive got an ms mpeg4 codec installed is this why i can do it?

come on people 'suck em and see'

No of course not, because they are two different things. I really don't know why you would go thru all the trouble of copying, then pasting, then opening a renamed preview file, when you can you DatView, a program designed for this very purpose.

Do you always take the long way home? :o B)

No, I use K-Dat and Avi Preview like everyone else. It's just everyone was saying it didn't work, so I thought I'd back him up. It was done more for curiosity's sake than anything else.

The reason i do it is because if the file is corrupt you can fix it with divfix or just play around with it, i lost a download in the beginning, when i was on dialup , 2 and a half weeks for monsters inc then bt tell me "you've used your months 150 hours", Stick it!

Ive never tried datview either by the way, is it any good?

anyway thats my first heated debate in a forum and i think i like it! :D

Ladies ladies ladies!

I use Vdub too. The bottom line is, no matter what any 1 says is that vdub is a way to preview a file. surely u can just press ctrl+c over ya file and then ctrl+v anywhere u want it. Then open the file in virtualdub. It "repairs the index" and u can then "save as .avi" using direct stream or sumthin" then WMP or whateva u hav can play it.

im definately not a comp/movie geek but i hav been using it 4 ages. (that is b4 i found the avi preview k-lite thing)

i enjoyed the debate by the way!
