My dads tired of everyone using his computer for games and whatever, so he told me that he would spend 1000$ at most building a new computer.

Just need a few clarifications. AM2 is the new way to go right? I just want to be able to upgrade my CPU next year or the year after if I have too.

As for ram..I want some decient ram..in this system I am going to try to get half decient everything..except for video card which I will upgrade in the future. Im thinking of doing intigrated grafics..or something around the 100-150$ range.

Right now I am thinking am2 x2 3800.

Last time I planned out a system you guys said something about shitty timing on my ram.

How is this? : OCZ26671024ELGEGXT 1G DDR2-667 Dual Channel Gold GX Edition (4-4-4-12)

Oh and should I get ddr or ddr2 ram? Would it be better to get this:?

OCZ4001024PFDC-K 2x512M DDR400 Performance Dual Channel (timing 2-3-3-6)

You have no choice- AM2 requires DDR2 memory.
Compared to plain vanilla DDR, all DDR2 timings suck.

Really..so what do you think. Should I be going with am2..and hoping for better ram to come out in the future?

Personally, I think right now is a terrible time to move to a new platform.
AM2 doesn't seem to offer much improvement over s939.
The new Conroe (Intel) series looks promising but availability and compatability are unknown.
I'm waiting till after the new year to see how all this shakes out before making any decisions.

Alrite..in that case I guess ill stick with 939..and just get more for my buck.

Whats ur opinion on ram? This any good?

Those are decent timings, but Cloaker hates OCz for some reason:huh: .

He's a Patriot Ram fan.

Im on a budget..I thought patriot was a little pricy.

DDR is going the way of SD RAM...higher prices and less availability.
Newegg doesn't even seem to carry most of the Patriot line anymore.

Sigh.

yes, agreed. i also am waiting for next gen, if u will, hardware to cum out. everything is pretty much cummn' out all @ once atm and now we just need to wait for compatibility, availability and of course all the bugs to work out. i would go am2 over 939 though. why downgrade from the get go and u can get am2 just as cheap. u can get a am2 5000 ($325), ur ocz mem, good mb, hd, and case for ur 1k. that is if ur planning on going with amd.

Go Intel, atleast 6600 core 2. THey are priced around $350-$400 highest but they beat the shit outta the fx-62.

Too bad im on a 1000$ budget..and a 160$ 3800 x2 is alot less than a 350$ duo.

edit- 122$

After some thought and discussion with a few different people I came up with this.

AM2 X2 4200+- 220$
OCZ26671024ELGEGXT 1G DDR2-667 Dual Channel Gold GX Edition (4-4-4-12) -130$
ASUS M2N-E -115$
ATI Sapphire 1600XT-150$
LG Dual layer dvd writer- 36$
WD 160GB HD- 75$
Enermax Noisetaker II EG495P-VE 485W Power Supply (20/24, Dual-fan)- 85$
Case-50$

Most people have told me that although there arnt any performance gains with AM2..there arnt that many losses either and going with AM2 might be a good descision for the future.
