New Comp

im gettin a new comp in a couple of weeks........ but i have no idea what 2 put in it.......

i no how 2 install everything, but have no idea what i need.....

i want 2 b able 2 play emulated games (SNES and GBA) and download LOADS of files (so i need a big harddisk).... but 4 the rest..... what do i need???? i wont b playing ne real games like quake or so, so i dont think i need a 3d card......

also, does it matter if i use linux instead of windows 4 the specs????

First, if you have the cash, you definately want to get an 800 MHz system bus with HyperThread. You can have dual channel DDR 400 MHz on top of that with the Springdale chipset.

For efficency go for 1GB of 1GHz RD RAM.

Unfortunately, RDRAM is incredibly expensive, and is not supported by Intel on its newest chipsets (the ones that support Hyper Threading)

RD-RAM? It is so passé.

It is proprietary($$) and as stated above, not supported by many mfg.

Just get DDR-RAM, it's the new standard.

If you aren't computer savvy, get Windows XP. That will more than satisfy you. You can always try something different later.

Get a stand-alone version of the O/S. I mean, don't buy a PC that only comes with a "restore" disc.

photo editing-Photoshop,
mediaplayer-Zoomplayer,
CD/DVD burning-Nero

That's all I use and I'm sure others can recommend some more goodies.

BTW, K-lite (http://doa2.host.sk/) kinda goes without saying. Afterall, where are you gonna get all that software? (nudge nudge wink wink)

Some suggested software: WinRAR 3.11, Raxco's PerfectDisk & or O&O Defrag Professional Edition, Norton Systemworks, jv16 PowerTools, Spybot S&D and AAW6, Opera 7.03 (don't like 7.10), Star Downloader & Belarc Advisor. Edit: Thought you were talking about software. :lol:

then you should go with the gforce2 graphics card, it works for all current games, not spectacular, but above average.

You might as well get XP professional. i don't know much about linux.

also think, if you're in high school going to college soon, get a laptop. unless you plan to lug your computer around.

well i kinda have a limited budget, say 700 euros (bout 700-800 dollars)...... im assembling a computer from scratch..... i do however already have a monitor (15" :( ) and can assemble it myself..... also i no i need @ least 120-160GB HD......

there's no real point in getting corsair ram for a non-gaming system
it'll be cheaper just to get a generic ram brand
plus, the asus a7n8x is a little bit overkill, you could get another board for quite a bit cheaper that will do basically the same job
barton is a good choice for a cpu though, and the 2500 should do ok for the next couple of years
