I want to buy a new disk from 500 gb to 1 tb, do u have any recommendations.
Cause my power supply is overloaded already i want a disk outside of pc, possibly not a very loud one. I never had such disk before. Anybody has any or knows any good ones ?

What will you be using it for? There's quite a difference between 500 gb and a terabyte. Do you actuallty need the extra 500 gb or no? :huh:

I will be using it for storing my and other ppl's releases soo i can share em online .
I've seen 500GB USB2 drives by LaCie for about £115 (€170) plus VAT.
If you want Firewire 800 that pushes the price up by over 50%.
1TB drives are about £350 (€510), so it really is important to decide if you need the capacity, but those drives have the Firewire 800 option.
Note - these are desktop drives so they are not intended to be carried around as portable storage.

You could get an external enclosure and put a drive into it. Seagate drives are quiet.

I was actually thinking about this one: http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~128122~/product.htm?affiliate=2012 but I've no personal experience of either.
I doubt there's much to choose between them in terms of performance, so I'd personally go for the cheapest.

I agree with VB.

2. The warranties I've seen on externals are 90 days to 1 year.
3. The warranties on internal HDD are from 1-5 years.

Thx for all your recommendations, i also think i should buy the cheapest of em all, but the cheapes 500 gb outside disk i found in online stores in my country costs around 320 $. External disks here compare to other things are very expensive here.

the best approach for this is to do what vb said, get harddrive enclosures, then "daisy" them up that way you dont need to connect many wires to your computer, also this is good because harddrives are cheaper when internal, and enclosures are really cheap

Nope. For the most part, a hard drive is a hard drive. The only difference being is if you put it inside the computer, or put it in an external enclosure. In the case of VB's example, that is an internal HDD. He is just making the suggestion that limesqeezer put it in an external enclosure.
I think we're saying the same thing, but I was interpreting your post differently when I read it before. :huh:

That really depends on where you're living i guess, i got a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 with 2 years of waranty. Hurray for Europe!
Still the 5 years you get on a Segate drive is more than that though :-)

I went with the most cheap possible way where i live, i will get it tomorrow. I got too much of maxtor already, probably 7 disks :D, they never let me down but they not the cheapest now.

Im now just wondering until i have the chance, would it be better to format my new external disk into NTFS, that was bought formatted in FAT32 ?

Why are fireware HDs more expensive?
The hardware required to implement firewire is slightly more expensive (but only about $2), and there were also royalty payments ($0.25) to Apple and other patent holders. I don't know if they still demand those payments, but even if they don't you can bet the manufacturers add quite a bit on to the price just in case.
Part of the increased cost is that when you get firewire you get both interfaces, and presumably some sort of logic chip to connect the interface to either firewire or USB.
There's absolutely no reason why the cost should rise in proportion to the disk size. There should be an extra cost for the additional interface and that should be carried throughout the range. In practice they price the product in line with "what the market will stand".
