Thinking about taking one up, recommandations welcome.

I want something intense, where you actually get to fight someone early on. Kicking is preferred, but anything is fine as long as there's real fighting.

If you're just after having a fight, why don't you go outside and be as you are on here?

I would genuinely quite like to try that:smilie4:

I'd need some training first, of course.

If you want to learn a martial art which really teaches you to fight, gets you fit, bit of discipline etc then Ju Jitsu is the way to go.

Most of the UFC fighters are now trained specifically for that. However a lot of them have a Ju Jitsu background as well. In the early days of mixed martial arts the Ju Jitsu exponents, particularly the Brazillion stylists won most of the time.

Ju Jitsu does do kicking, punching and throwing. However it also does locks, chokes etc. It brings in the best, most effective parts of everything.

If you want flash, but you can't actually fight very well, then Tae Kwon Do is your man.

What J'P said.

If I wasn't so lazy I would have a go at a Filipino styles since they have more focus on knives, which is probably most relevant when you're walking down the street in Croydon.

I did Ju-Jutsu for years. What has stuck with me best, and what I've always found useful is just being able to fall down without hurting myself. The amount of training we went through just learning to fall down right gave me reflexes I hope I never lose.

It has probably saved me from breaking a few bones and quite possibly my neck when doing silly things, both drunk and sober.

SnnY FTW.

The other good thing about things like Ju Jitsu is that you learn to deal with proper fighting. When you get hit you don't panic, you take it for what it is, most folk can't actually hit very hard. You don't back off and cower like a wee lassie. You walk thro' it and you react the way you have been trained to.

What you do is train yourself to react to a situation properly, rather than making it easier for your assailant. That's proper martial arts, not ballet dancing.

Sounds good, it's like everything combined. And tae kwon do looks sweet as well, mainly because I'd prefer kicking over punching.

Jeet Kun Do is supposedly one of the best.
Not as much form and stances as the others, just a continuous flow, like.

I've watched people train, it is rather impressive. The instructor was one of Bruce Lee's students. An American chap who was touring if memory serves. Not Bruce Lee obviously, the instructor.

/me gets technical

The style Bruce Lee learnt was Wing Chun, which he evolved into Jeet Kun Do.

Wing Chun's pretty straight forward, no high kicks, pretty good if all you want to do is fight well instead of look pretty. There's nothing wrong with a stiff knee in the balls.

you were talking about kicking and actual fighting - well, if i can deviate from "martial arts" i'd recomend you some "modern" arts :-) - K1 (pride) - a lot of kicking and boxing and other things :D BTW, i'd never try it - too damn crazy!

I remember growing up and meeting a young fellow who was a master at Savate a French foot boxing style . It always made me curious as no one taught it where I lived . We fought with our feet as kids ,little pointy shoes to inflict the most damage . :ermm:

Mind you the best fighter in our group was this little kid with the head the size of a watermellon , the old coco bonk was a killer .

if you get the chance to watch someone really good at savate work out, do, it's flat out insane. Tae Kwon Do is not just fancy kicks. it was originally created as a self defense art to help a little territory in Korea defend it's self from invaders. since then however, it has been morphed into a glitzy useless compition art filled with fancy jumping spinning kicks that look really fancy until you see someone try one in an actual fight and get creamed. It was and still can be a good self defense art, although it depends on who is teaching it and what their purpose is. I did Tae Kwon Do for 8 years, my instructer was pretty much nothing but self defense untill right up before I left, the empasis on the fancy stuff is a big reason that I left. Compition TKD is more common, and all it really is is fancy kicks that are useless in real combat. it was funny to see the people from my school rip up the compition people when we first started going to sparing tornements. I have a friend that is big into wing chung, for a while he was working out like five hours a day or more. he does things like hit sandbags with his hands to build up calcium in his hands (known as heavy hand) so that he can hit harder.

How long did it take to be able to do a really basic high kick, and then to do it really effectively? I bet it took a lot longer than to learn to punch someone really hard in the head.

Any style is effective after training, even Queensbury rules boxing, it's just that in some styles are quicker to get good at.

High kick? I can jump up and kick someone in the head if that counts... I still think it's harder to punch someone really had in the head, unless you get a sucker punch and knock the lights out of them.

Still, the Engerland fighting system looks the most lethal so far.

If you tried to jump and kick someone in the head in an actual fight, people would just laugh at you for being such a tit.

I can kick most people in the head without jumping, anyway:snooty:

I can kick people in the head with out jumping too, and I am horrably unflexable. probably the most effective kick though is a sidekick into the midsection of an opponent that is trying to punch you. unless you'er a midget, you can kick them before they are in range to punch you.
