the ratio system is there so ppl share, and because of the nature of bittorrent, its needed, or nobody would get anything downloaded.
then 1 day along came a bunch of noobs trying to get invites so they started seeding too.

to answer ur question, the point in keeping a ratio there is to be a good member, because the site wouldnt be able to survive without doing so, and because not everyone seeds just to get invites.

We (users) don't need to keep a high ratio on any site.
It has been proved that the ideal ratio for every user at a site is around 0.85 (don't remember the article though...).
If you keep a ratio at around 1 ou 1,... it's enough :)
