i looked it up because i thought it should be "learnt",
according to my resources both seem to be correct....
Which is correct and why?

Learnt is past tense, in the sense that you have already done it, so as far as i'm aware it should be learnt. Although thats not to say it shouldn't be learned either.

So you correcting him was basically wrong.

My own feeling is learned sounds more formal than learnt. Which would kind of fit the scenario.
