oh buddy  i don't know the answer but here are some hard won tips on reinstalling win98 after formating

next time you clean install partition your HDD into at least 2 volumes so that you can keep you data on a non system HDD better still get a second physical drive
you can usr fdisk or partition magic to partition a drive
when reinstalling i usually disconect the data drive while installing windows [just in case]
when you're ready plug it in and your in business again
it just makes the starting again from the format situation alot easier the deal with ;)

[one note :: once i had a data HDD formated as FAT32 by win2k when i went back to a 98se installation and used it to access the disk it said it found errors and would run scan disk - to cut a long story short 98 doesn't like 2k formatted FAT32 drives (it reads them but says that they have errors) - i stupidly let scan disk automatically fix errors and it rewrote the boot sector so that the drive was inaccessable :( , i had to buy 'getdataback' to retreive my data - so don't try this at home OK]

good luck

PS do you have a network adapter? if so beg borrow or steal a friends computer and a cross-over cable so you can move important files onto another box while you reinstall
it's much easier than backing up to external media like CDs :)
