Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was fighting for his life last night after an attempt to break the land speed record ended in disaster.

Hammond, who was filming for a forthcoming episode of the BBC2 show, crashed at speeds of up to 280mph, overturning his jet powered car

He was driving a jet car and on the last run of the day it turned over, injuring him and trapping him inside.

Fortunately the emergency services were there and were able to get him out of the wreckage and rush him to hospital (by helicopter). However he is currently in a critical state.

One hopes he will survive this, anything else is a bonus.

Latest report says he's been upgraded to "stable", they also upped his speed to 300mph :smilie4:

Why is there a quote from Quentin Wilson on the BBC article?

"Quick, we need someone to say something nice about Hammond. Let's ask that guy who used to do Top Gear way before Hammond turned up. That relationship is just about tenuous enough."

:dabs: what's gonna happen if he makes a full recovery. the TV nearly says he's dead. everybody is referring to him in past-tense, though as far as i understand "stable" means not dead.

If you insert antonyms for 'brilliant', 'entertaining' and 'inspiration' - that statement works perfectly for busyman.

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has suffered a "significant brain injury" after crashing a jet-powered car at speeds of up to 300mph during filming.

Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary said they were "reasonably optimistic" the 36-year-old would make a good recovery.

resonably opitimistic, don't know if thats promising or not.

why are there questions about safety? it's a car that goes 300mph and has parachutes for brakes :dabs:

DorisInsinuate

I think the question is why did they let Richard Hammond do it? His legs probably can't reach the brake pedal.

DorisInsinuate
09-21-2006, 11:16 PM
Experts have suggested that the crash may have been caused by driver error, mechanical failure or a sudden gust of wind that blew across the airfield during the car’s final run.
Well, duh.

considerably faster than that, if he was looking to break the land speed record

considerably faster than that, if he was looking to break the land speed recordWell, 0.3 miles per hour faster - cos the British land speed record, the one he was trying to break, currently stands at 300.3mph.

It would be really stupid to try to break the world land speed record in the UK. We don't got no Black Rock Desert.
