This video has been a favourite of mine for a long time.
It's really not saying we're all monkeys and can't do anything about it, but it's poking fun at the way we try and suggest attacking each other vengefully is somehow "human". It pokes fun at this silly notion of big dick contest arms races engaged in by the wrinkled children who think they run the place.

I still have (many) people in my college classes that get insulted when you say we evolved from monkeys....
example:
in class, during a Q&A the word Evolution came up... more then a few students asked "What is evolution?" (no shit... no joking... these are 18-20 year olds). I said that it's the belief that we evolved from monkeys. They say "I didn't evolve from no fucking monkeys... you calling us monkeys?" Jeeez some people.
Keep in mind this was completly serious and the guy(s) were not joking.

Technically we didn't evolve from monkeys - we evolved with them from a common ancestor that had human and money like traits. One group evolved to take advantage of a given environment - primarily terrestrial and another stayed arboreal. This also seems to have given rise to the great apes (almost all terrestrial adaptations except in some circumstances like the orangutan which evolved for a jungle existence.
To be accurate the old saying should be "I'll be a monkey's cousin" rather than its uncle.
Meihan - creation and evolution are two separate concepts. Assuming adaptation to an environment resulting from genetic variation and selection of advantageous traits does NOT preclude a magical act of creation. The two beliefs are mutually exclusive and can coexist.

Wow, this video is a really broad, cynical and seemingly antisocial generalization and denouncement of the wonderful acheivements and capabilites the human race has acheived and reached. Looks like the author is oversimplifying the world in order to better understand it in his 'litte' 'monkey' terms.

I don't think the world would be a better place if more people thought _badly_, that's silly.
While I appreciate the fact that we're just animals, and the humility that brings (humility is a good thing, as opposed to humiliation), it's just no good to say that we're equal to other animals. Some animals really are more equal than others.
Do you think that a Lion thinks it's equal to a Zebra? That is, presuming that it could have such a high level of consciences to allow such a thought in the first place.
And that's the point, our brains are bloody amazing. Sure you could say that our developed brains only serve the same function as say, an ant eater's developed trunk, but that would be disingenuous in my opinion. An ant eater's trunk, no matter how developed, can only serve one function (survival). Our brains can travel the universe.
Take some time to take that in for a moment; our brains can travel the universe.
We are better than monkeys, apes, _and_ ant eaters. Be proud of being human, just don't look around to see what some of us are doing (or not doing) with our developed potentially universe traveling brains -- it can be a little depressing.
N.B. I have nothing against ant eaters. Some of my best friends are ant eaters.

First has to come the realization that we're just monkeys. *Then* we can realize how amazing a monkey we really are.
Let's get the nationalism, religious strife, and sometimes just plain spite under control, then we can put our energies into the important stuff - like making sure that there are no poor or starving monkeys. Like making monkey hives in other parts of the solar system and maybe eventually even other solar systems. We're amazing monkeys and our big brains mean we can be very effective stewards of non-monkeys. Then we can be ready when we finally find and/or make some non-monkeys with the curse of consciousness.

There is no such thing as a "Human-Monkey". As a viable species, we are what is commonly referred to in passing (probably mostly by other monkeys) as "Domesticated Apes". I think of myself (and all of you) this way. It helps a great deal to explain most, if not all, of human behavior.

I am displeased with people's efforts to make humans indistinguishable from the rest of Creation. The logical implications are simply too unsettling for me to reconcile; morality is an illusion. Consider a random act of "violence" where everyone you "love" is killed for no reason. Try and personalize this. Chimpanzee mothers have been known to die of grief if their child dies. Maybe animals aren't so different than us. Genetically, were 99% the same as chimpanzees.
This however, does not mean that God does not play a role in our life. Who's to say that God didn't didn't create the first little single celled lifeform that seeded all other life? To me - it makes me feel like the human race is more special if we had to crawl up from the mud - near indistinguisable from other creatures. We've built great cities, destroyed entire cultures and created great advances due to our adaptations. We didn't get a leg up from any supernatural being IMO yet here we are... very well adapted to our environment and able to think abstractly and emphathize - this (I believe) is what keeps us from killing each other on a whim because we don't believe in divine retribution.

It's really not saying we're all monkeys and can't do anything about it, but it's poking fun at the way we try and suggest attacking each other vengefully is somehow "human". It pokes fun at this silly notion of big dick contest arms races engaged in by the wrinkled children who think they run the place.

I still have (many) people in my college classes that get insulted when you say we evolved from monkeys....
example:
in class, during a Q&A the word Evolution came up... more then a few students asked "What is evolution?" (no shit... no joking... these are 18-20 year olds). I said that it's the belief that we evolved from monkeys. They say "I didn't evolve from no fucking monkeys... you calling us monkeys?" Jeeez some people.
Keep in mind this was completly serious and the guy(s) were not joking.

Technically we didn't evolve from monkeys - we evolved with them from a common ancestor that had human and money like traits. One group evolved to take advantage of a given environment - primarily terrestrial and another stayed arboreal. This also seems to have given rise to the great apes (almost all terrestrial adaptations except in some circumstances like the orangutan which evolved for a jungle existence.
To be accurate the old saying should be "I'll be a monkey's cousin" rather than its uncle.
Meihan - creation and evolution are two separate concepts. Assuming adaptation to an environment resulting from genetic variation and selection of advantageous traits does NOT preclude a magical act of creation. The two beliefs are mutually exclusive and can coexist.

While I appreciate the fact that we're just animals, and the humility that brings (humility is a good thing, as opposed to humiliation), it's just no good to say that we're equal to other animals. Some animals really are more equal than others.
Do you think that a Lion thinks it's equal to a Zebra? That is, presuming that it could have such a high level of consciences to allow such a thought in the first place.
And that's the point, our brains are bloody amazing. Sure you could say that our developed brains only serve the same function as say, an ant eater's developed trunk, but that would be disingenuous in my opinion. An ant eater's trunk, no matter how developed, can only serve one function (survival). Our brains can travel the universe.
Take some time to take that in for a moment; our brains can travel the universe.
We are better than monkeys, apes, _and_ ant eaters. Be proud of being human, just don't look around to see what some of us are doing (or not doing) with our developed potentially universe traveling brains -- it can be a little depressing.
N.B. I have nothing against ant eaters. Some of my best friends are ant eaters.

First has to come the realization that we're just monkeys. *Then* we can realize how amazing a monkey we really are.
Let's get the nationalism, religious strife, and sometimes just plain spite under control, then we can put our energies into the important stuff - like making sure that there are no poor or starving monkeys. Like making monkey hives in other parts of the solar system and maybe eventually even other solar systems. We're amazing monkeys and our big brains mean we can be very effective stewards of non-monkeys. Then we can be ready when we finally find and/or make some non-monkeys with the curse of consciousness.

There is no such thing as a "Human-Monkey". As a viable species, we are what is commonly referred to in passing (probably mostly by other monkeys) as "Domesticated Apes". I think of myself (and all of you) this way. It helps a great deal to explain most, if not all, of human behavior.

Although I'm obviously in the minority here, at least I still have free speech (for how much longer?) to share my opinion.
I am displeased with people's efforts to make humans indistinguishable from the rest of Creation. The logical implications are simply too unsettling for me to reconcile; morality is an illusion. Consider a random act of "violence" where everyone you "love" is killed for no reason. Try and personalize this. If we are all just monkeys, this incident is merely inconvenient; any notion of "grief" is a neurological anomaly, any desire for "justice" is a chemical imbalance, and any appeal to the supernatural is a flagrant response to social brainwashing.
I pray that everyone who reads this post is convicted, and that instead of responding immediately to criticize this Fundamentalist Christian that they contemplate why we have a conscience. Altruism(the basis of conscience) is beneficial to organisms, much more so for highly social organisms such as humans. You see it happen in hundreds of species.

Chimpanzee mothers have been known to die of grief if their child dies. Maybe animals aren't so different than us. Genetically, were 99% the same as chimpanzees.
This however, does not mean that God does not play a role in our life. Who's to say that God didn't didn't create the first little single celled lifeform that seeded all other life? Who's to say that he didn't slowly arrive at humans through the evolutionary process? Who's to say that we're the finished product??

To me - it makes me feel like the human race is more special if we had to crawl up from the mud - near indistinguisable from other creatures. We've built great cities, destroyed entire cultures and created great advances due to our adaptations. We didn't get a leg up from any supernatural being IMO yet here we are... very well adapted to our environment and able to think abstractly and emphathize - this (I believe) is what keeps us from killing each other on a whim because we don't believe in divine retribution.
