I'm using winrar but can't see a straight forward option anywhere.

Anyone shed any light?

open archive > commands > add files to archive > hit cancel > advance tab > set password.

I've done that, chosen a password clicked ok. then get a message "no files where selected to be added".

I've also tryed adding a file and then choosing a password.

.rar's still opening without a password

yup , he did that and I tried it also but it seems you have to add files or something or repack it and crunch it back together. Maybe a free file encryption proggy can make the job easier.

Why not just extract files, then make a new rar with password?

That's what I'd do. It seems you may come across some unexpected errors if you do it post raring (maybe it will not like it since it was put togehter in a non native away)
