I'm looking to replace my pos psu. I have a budget of $60, and was wondering what the best psu avalable under $60 is. the system it would be powering is a P4 3ghz northwood, 2gig ram, x800 graphics and 3-4 7200rpm harddrives. I'm not looking to upgrade this computer further.
looks aren't important as the case it's going into is black with no windows or lights.
any ideas?

Consider what you want out of a new PSU.

Quiet - single 120mm fan
Power - around 500W
Meets Intel specs - dual 12v rail

I could only find one PSU which matches those requirements and falls in your price range, from a manufacturer that I would trust.

Nice link Clocker I'm on the hunt for a new psu for the kids pc..At least thats what I tell the wife :D.....@Tempestv (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/../members/tempestv-111899) don't skimp on the psu. A good quality one will last you thru a few upgrades and won't be the cause of any problems...If you buy a cheapy you will have buyers remorse and wish you had spent the extra...

As far as im concerned you want to go for any psu made by these manufacturers.

Enermax.
Antec.
Thermaltake
Tagen

Any of these will be great , most others are generic ones , which usually fail , or cause random restarts.

Any of these will be great , most others are generic ones , which usually fail , or cause random restarts. It's difficult to recommend a power supply based solely on the seller's name.
Thermaltake for instance, doesn't actually make any of the units they sell, they are all custom specced or just rebranded units made by someone else, so it's common to have variations in quality through the entire product line.

Going off the fact that i have come across numerous pc,s that have failed due to generic psu,s , i will only use either of the brands that i have previously listed . I have never had one fail on me , so its quite obvious that i will recommend them. They are all high quality psu,s . I really cant see the point in fitting a cheap make . Ok , it might last years , but why take the chance ?.
I also think that the majority of people who build pc,s or either know what brands are relaible would agree with me.

according to david hammock at EOCF, thermaltake isnt a reliable brand. there are many other manufacturers that make good psu's, ocz and forton are well known. check this out for your own good http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=136602
