I have been with aol for about a week now and everything is good except they dont offer a static ip, this is very important as i have access to a private FTP but can only register 1 ip with them so everytime i get disconnected or restart my pc i can get in...

anyone have the same problem with them? or is there any software i can use to keep the same ip?

thanks for any help...:)

Where are you?

In the UK very few ISPs offer a static IP. I think Demon do.

You could get a wireless ADSL router, that will be less likely to disconnect from the internet than your PC, and so your IP address won't change unless you restart the router.

Or use a proxy, would that work like.

Barbarossa

Could do.

yeah i have been told to try a router, what would a proxy do?

thanks for the reply.

a proxy basically means that no matter what your IP address is, you always connect via another server with a known IP address.

Before:-

You ------> FTP Server

After:-

You ------> Proxy Server -------> FTP Server

Therefore, your credentials remain valid.

JPaul

If you use a proxy you will always access the ftp site via that. So if your own ip changes it won't really matter as the FTP will see the proxy ergo the same ip.

I don't know if it will work it's just an idea.

What he said.

That sounds like it could work, could you recommend someone?

thanks

There's loads

Type free proxy into google

http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=free+proxy&meta=&btnG=Google+Search

Proxies are, in the main, unreliable and unless your ISP offers some (AOL don't) then you'll have a very hard time finding a fast, reliable proxy that won't ban you for downloading gigabytes of information thro' it.

Best get that router, I reckon.

JPaul

The router will also normally afford the added security of a NAT firewall. Never a bad thing.

Make sure the proxy allows FTP traffic! :smilie4:

However, manker is right too. I think this is probably a dead end.

Barbarossa

Have you any particularly strong ties to AOL?

Why not get yourself a new ISP that does offer static IP addresses

jonesad24
10-17-2006, 12:12 PM
Not really, but i have only just joined them and dont really want the hassle of changing again, plus i dont have a big choice of isp's that offer 8meg, no contract and unlimited downloads...

I have had a quick look around and found this...

would this do the job?

That's pretty cheap!

Yeah, it'll do the job :)

Yeah but I'd go for the wireless option if you can afford it.

It's more flexible long term if you want to add other PCs or perhaps laptops. Saves you running wires round the house.

Barbarossa

Yeah, should do. :idunno:

Does your PC have an ethernet card

Any problems with it, just ask in here - The Lounge.

Don't go to HardwareWorld ffs, they'll break your whole computer and expect you to pick up the tab.

They're complete bastards, basically.

And also they will just post an answer even if they don't know if it's true or not.

People here will either not answer, answer because they know or say have you tried this it may work.

Yeah but in HardwareWorld we would warn you that the "router" you selected is a modem/router and you most likely already have a modem.

In hardwareworld, they also tend to only read the last reply, not the whole thread.

Yeah but for about £12 who gives a fuck and you know that there will be no problems with compatability, or extra leads, or power supplies. So why not use the all in one unit. Saving hassle, space and probably leccy.

Oh and it's much more common to get a joint unit nowadays, at least where I come from

Well i'm all installed and online using the router :D

but it has cut off a couple of times so far. This sounds like a really stupid question but if i wanted to disconnect from the internet then how do i do it? because when i restarted my pc and clicked firefox i was connected already.

I take it i'm still not using my "connect to aol" icon on my desltop?

Barbarossa
10-18-2006, 09:48 AM
Well done :01:

Your ADSL router is permanently connected to the internet, that's how you're keeping the same IP address all the time now.

If you want to temporarily disconnect your PC from your router, then you should right-click on the little network icon in the system tray, and choose disable.

jonesad24
10-18-2006, 09:55 AM
O i see, and yeah i seem to be keeping the same ip :w00t:

Now i need to forward my ports to make sure i'm connectable...

Thanks for all the help guys,

i have been told the port's for ftp are 20-21

any ideas...

Barbarossa
10-18-2006, 10:52 AM

Do you need to do that? I thought you only need to do that if you're hosting an FTP site

jonesad24
10-18-2006, 10:53 AM

jonesad24
10-18-2006, 11:03 AM

Try turning on passive mode and see if that helps.

F6, Connection, Proxy, select your proxy, or none if you don't use one, and make sure 'Use Passive mode' is checked

Barbarossa
10-18-2006, 02:34 PM
Yes, try passive mode.

Q: Why can't I see any files? I can see them in other ftp clients.
A: There are two possible reasons.
1. You are behind a firewall and the FTP server is unable to connect to your computer. To resolve this issue you need to use Passive mode. This option is located in Preferences on the Proxy tab. Check "Use Passive mode".
2. The files may be hidden on the ftp server, and in order to see them you need to change the list method. This is located in Preferences on the Options tab. Change the List method to show hidden files. Note: some sites don't allow you to view hidden files and will result in an error. To resolve this problem, go into the Site Manager, select the site and click the advanced tab. Uncheck "show hidden files", then save to keep the changes
