I haven't really kept up with the AMD race lately as I've had my attention on other important matters, however it looks like the 939 sockets are being phased out already. What is the next one to look out for, for longer compatibility?

I've seen alot of AM2's, Is Am2 the way to go for building a newer dual core AMD system?

AM2 socket also means a change to DDR2 RAM.

Yes AM2 is the new AMD standard, but look at the prices compared to Core 2 Duo. If you are going to spend that much money why not just wait for Core 2 Quadro (Quad Core) from Intel?

Depends on what you want to end up with.
Although AM2 is the newest AMD platform, s939 (with the NF4 chipset) is a mature and quite capable setup and right now, dirt cheap.
Whether you are buying used (my preferred route) or new, s939 can be had for a (comparative) song.

If you want all new stuff I fail to see why you'd even look at AM2 right now, the Intel Conroe and associated boards (especially the 965 chipsets with "Matrix RAID") are far superior and look to stay that way for a while.
Personally, I'm waiting till Feb./March (maybe) to make my next move but it will almost certainly be to Intel this go-round.

I built a 939 system last year with an Asus A8n and an Athlon 64 3500, and was extremely happy with the result, however I have an older A7v8x + athlon XP 1900 that currently works as a fileserver for all the computers in my house, I'm looking to replace it. My first thought was to build another 939 setup considering the prices have dropped drastically since last year, but then I saw the new platform and wasn't sure whether I was making the right decision.

However if 939 is still more stable than the AM2's, then I'll have to opt for that until AM2 matures a little. Thinking maybe a DFI Lan Party UT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136166) mobo, with Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103544). You think that would make a solid setup for another year or so?

for a fileserv, yes. maybe sell ur most lowest performing pc u have and bump the better ones down to do act as the serv and build urself a new conroe for ur everday use pc? that's more logical imo.
