Hi,

Been using Windows Firewall on a recent new build and it seems ok but think I should now change to the best.... Which is?

I've no idea... Some say Outpost is easy to use and memory lite so i may try that, any other good suggestions pls?

I know this has been done before but those threads are quite old now so I wonder if things have changed now.

Thanks

So many to choose from I would be happy with 5 or 6 Ive tried but changed for one reason or another . I'm leaning more to a full Internet Security Suite like F-Secure or Symantec Client Security . Stand alone ones are easy tho , I like Look "N" Stop or Zonealarm Pro .

There is a comparison here but keep in mind some pay for a higher ranking .

i tried zone alarm and that is the only one i've tried. didn't like it. even though i gave permission for programs to run za still didn't allow them to run. also, zapro or whatever also has the game function and that crap didnt' work either. internet games always stuttered. meh, windows firewall works for me. lol, if that really even works.

Well you know they work when you can't share thru p2p or use MSN.

I got a small problem...
I got outpost (from a man in a dark alley if you know what I mean) and it worked great but I pressed wrong update button and it updated program and now says its time to renew?? I've uninstalled and re-installed but it still says it, must have planted something in my registry or something.
Anyone know how to bypass this pls?

lol, that's funny. guess i never thought of it that way. true. my quabble was that sure, they worked in that aspect, but having to turn it off to run certain programs and/or games is retarded. now i'm vulnerable.

I just changed to Outpost,
why is the icon in the sidetray always a question mark?
http://imgfly.com/files/271006_124017/oooo.png
yes i have autoupdate on.

4play
10-27-2006, 10:02 AM
because the icon is meant to be a question mark.

I use outpost but i found the latest releases very annoying since there are too many pop ups asking to give permission. I know thats what its meant to do but you tend to get bored after 10 mins on a new install and just press allow all for everything after the 70th time.

oh ok i thought i had some outpost error or something,
Yes i agree it brings up alot more questions which can get confusing and somewhat annoying.... but it is for your own safety...

will try zonealarm later to see difference.

@ Billy the fish, what version you using?

@4play, sounds like you chose advanced configuration which prompts alot, goto file (top left) and choose new configuration and then choose the one under advanced and you wont get as many prompts like dns, injection blah blah you get with advanced.

Oh my choce is Outpost,lol.

We should have another thread entitled what firewall do you use for your NoObie friends ? I try to use something simple and easy to setup for them .

ZA works but as I said I prefer an all in one security suite to keep the phone calls down . :dabs:

Friend : This firewall sucks ,Peat I can't get on the net .

Peat : Its doing its job then ?

Try downloading a new working version from somewhere and the crack for that should fix your problem ;)

How do you rate the best ?

Has anyone done a comparison on what attacks various firewalls protect you from.

I have used Zonealarm Free for the last 2 years for 2 reasons, it is free and seemed to be quite popular on these boards (I had not heard of Outpost till now but this seems popular also).

The thing I do not like about Zonealarm is that its user interface is very clunky and non-intuitive !

The only bad one is the one not config right . It should at least ask for permissions to allow internet connections ,then you know its working right .

Then your antispyware program should flag it as should we allow this startup group to be added to your start menu , or something to that effect .

Look'n'stop. Nice lite firewall, doesn't hog system resources like some others. Comes preconfigured for most standard apps.

Outpost seems to excel in these tests.

Outpost has always been my recommendation, and I use 4.0. All the messages don't bother me, ;) , it is for security and its neat how it'll detect changes (stops lotta bad progs and reminds me of Vista User Protection).

It's the ONLY security I have so less resources (includes Spyware plugin anyways). A-Virus, I swear AV software is a joke.

@Hairbautt , ya it seems like a complete test , most firewalls Ive tried seem to be rated stealth or if not at least some info on how to config to make it so .

@Spaceboy , Look "N" Stop seems tooo secure under advanced rules , had problems with most P2P programs I use so gave it up . But its good for some who just wants to email and surf the net , nothing better .

Why do you say that ? I just D/L 'd off Uttorent and was thinking of trying .

I seem to be having trouble with F-Secure Internet 2006 updating so thought I'd switch ,but haven't read too much about Kaspersky .
