Suggestions for Converting .VOB to .AVI

Hey, I have attempted to convert my DVDs to .AVI format so many times, and unfortunatly I always end up getting terrible picture quality and the video will often unalign itself with the audio.
Can anyone give me a few ideas on how to get the best possible outcome in .AVI format? What is the best program?:huh:

But how high quailty are you talking about wanting to obtain? Like high quality scene dvd rips?

No, i'm just seeking a program that will give me a very clear result similar to watching it straight from the dvd
