Blood of the scribe shall be posted tomorrow, for now:

What do you consider to be some cool solos? And yes it would definitely help if the actual song was good to listen to, not just the solo, so I picked the following because not only are the kickass songs in general but the solos pretty much own everything else out there, they're not in order except the bolded one is the clear winner.

One - Metallica
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Fade to Black - Metallica
Walk With Me in Hell - Lamb of God
Ashes of the Wake - Lamb of God
Pretty much anything Petrucci spews forth
Far Beyond the Sun - Malmsteen
Walk - Pantera
Angel of Death - Slayer
Hanger 18 - Megadeth
Eruption - Van Halen

This Godless Endeavor - Nevermore

seriously though, godless endeavor has the best solo I have ever heard in my life, the song itself being kickass (if you're looking at it from a non-solo point of view).

Those are just some that randomly came to mind, so I know there are hundreds more out there, so what are your picks?

Remember to bold the one that is the clear winner from your selection.

And for the love of god, don't put Stairway to Heaven as one of your picks, that song is way too overplayed/hyped. It used to be special now every n00b has to imitate Jimmy P.

rage against the machine - know your enemy
-morello is the shit, duh. creative, unconventional, etc. the live version from woodstock '99 is even better than the studio version.

lynyrd skynyrd - searchin
-not even close to a popular skynyrd song, but it's one of my faves. there are a few solos in the song, all are awesome.

deep purple - child in time
-ritchie blackmore is a GOD.

van halen - mean street OR atomic punk
-EvH is even more of a GOD.

liquid tension experiment - acid rain
-the whole damn song is a solo i think. and with petrucci behind the axe you gotta expect some flashy work here and there.

metallica - the four horsemen call of the ktulu
-i'm limiting myself to one. it was between the four horsemen or creeping death and i think i like this one more. it does the split where you have the melodic, well crafted lines by hammet, then the other half where its a balls out speed attack. WAIT, i just changed my choice to 'call of the ktulu.' thats the best 'tallica song ever and its all solos.

crosby, stills, nash & young - down by the river
-all masters just giving it everything they got back n forth.

i think i'm done for now.

Some of the best guitar playing I have heard is on Waylon Jennings records. Jennings was bass guitarist for Buddy Holly.:)
