A heat sink is a big bit of shaped metal (aluminium or copper) that is used to draw heat away from the processor, modern processors also need a fan on the heatsink.

Some thermal paste/grease is normaly needed between the processor and heatsink as well.

Don't buy an AMD OEM (without HSF=heatsink & fan) cpu. First they give you only 90 day warr. (sometimes 15 days). For $5-15 USD more get an AMD retail (w/HSF) & it comes w/3yr. warr. :)

No arguement here. I agree with you as far as they're better HSF solutions than the standard AMD one. My point is to that gent is that go ahead & buy retail. Otherwise he's gonna end up with a 15 day warranty or some such bs. My friend just bought a high end AMD Barton cpu. But he bought it retail so he got the 3yr. warr. That's it. That's my point. GL

Just buy your AMD cpu retail. That way you get a HSF included & a 3yr warranty. OK before anybody flames this advice. He's very new. And it's about a low end cpu. :)

No sweat. Wasn't talking bout you or anyone else. Just trying to keep it real simple for the new poster. Peace.

See if you can get a Cyclone by Antec it's pretty good. I overclocked a duron and used this fan/heatsink combo and it worked wonderfully for me for 2 years.

P.S. Make ABSOLUTELY SURE when you install the processor/heatsink that you follow the AMD guidelines regarding the proper placement of the clip for the heatsink/fan, as it will overheat if improperly installed, and you'll end up with a fried CPU and or damage to the motherboard.

Come on. Keep it simple. Original posters new. He doesn't OC. :)

Just so you know, I had that heatsinc, loud as hell

Personally, I buy from www.newegg.com , great tech support, great warantys, and pretty good pricing

Speeze makes some good stuff, I use that now, I dropped my processor temp 10 degrees celcius going from the one you linked to and the one I have now, and it was only 15 bucks with the fan

I fn give up. Go ahead confuse the shit out of the n00bs. When they ask simple basic computer questions, respond with geek speak & talk about high performance & oc'ing.

@zapjb don't dispair, don't give up. Your posts were right on track.

Sometimes when (us) noobs are talking about going for a walk, some ppl think it's time to organize a marathon. Bad analogy. But you obviously got the point and were just trying to make it.

Peace ;)

I don't see anything so difficult for the noob to understand, he asked for a suggestion regarding the heatsink and I suggested a heatsink/fan that goes by the name of Cyclone, made by the company Antec, what's so hard for him to understand there? If it's regarding the term "Overclocking", all he has to do is ignore that part, point is, asked about a heatsink gave a reply and referred a GOOD one that'll serve his purpose well.

I'm totally baffled. You say you have built 7 PCs and yet you say you don't know what a heatsink is? <_<

Again, I'd recommend Speeze, they're quiet and really provide some good cooling

http://www.speeze.com/ is their website, but its down?
