the man is the greatest drummer ever... he played in lots of bands (including blink 182 *shudder*{mainstream punk *shudder*}) but he pulls off the most insane beats and fills!

Well, I play drums since 1968 ( I was almost 6 ) and I certainly played along many different kinds of music... personally, I have no difficulties to play neither Scott Raynor's nor Travis Barker's stuffs, but despite my long experience, I still find very difficult to play many parts by, say, Vinnie Colaiuta, Mark Brzezicki, Simon Phillips, Pierre Moerlen, Jack DeJohnette, Max Roach, Manu Katchè, Pierre Favre, Stewart Colepand and many other excellent drummers...
I can play the major part of their stuffs, but it's really, really hard...indeed, I think that all musicians leave their own tracks and that's the good of Music :)
It is a matter of preferences and often people tend to prefer musicians who play the same music that they like to listen to, so one tends, in example, to think that Jean-Luc Ponty is a great violinist because he/she likes the Fusion stuff much and probably he/she never heard about Uto Ughi or Salvatore Accardo playing Niccolò Paganini compositions...well, Ponty can play indeed, but can he really compete with Uto Ughi ?
Music is SO various and there are SO many things to evaluate...
...and then, let's say it, is it really that important HOW good a musician plays his/her own instrument ?
I like music that makes me dream, that turns my actual mood into a state of grace, that leaves me something to reflect about...NOT musicians that I would be able to imitate...it doesn't make a sense and it is irrilevant, IMHO...
I love a song in its whole and I still think that the main and most important figure is the Composer / Songwriter: I guess any drummer can easely play any part Ringo played in any Beatles' song, but is there anyone out there who CAN write wonderful songs like many the Beatles did ?

If there's such a composer reading this, then he/she has to know that I'm available to play for free ANY drums, bass and guitar parts in all of his/her songs :P

My humble suggestion to ALL the musicians and for ALL the instruments...listen to ALL the Music styles and take the time to play ALL the Music styles: you get for sure unexpected surprises and elements that you can easely turn into yours and that will help your own groove and style to grow up !

Take care you all ! :)

There's that generational thing again.

Zappa's another underappreciated player.

I've never heard the duet; at the relatively late date it must have taken place, I'm sure Zappa enjoyed being pushed a bit.

Everybody's heard the Zappa/Vai tale, but I must admit my readings of Musician/Guitarist predate Vai by a decade or so, and I've always been curious as to why Vai was such a big fan...

4) Danney Carey (Tool)

Honorable Mentions: Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal) and

i like aaron gilipsie from underoath very unique style, i like his setup too

18 x 24 bass drum <-- bigger than adverage which is 18 x 20 or 18 x 22
rocks 1 tom a 10 x 13
rocks 2 floor toms 16 x 16 and 16 x 18
and uses very unique cymbals that have a distinct sound meinl

his music is very low end, fast paced and sounds amazing better than all the joey jordison lets see how fast i can hit the pedals on my bass drum.

for flat out cool to watch, Gene Kupra. see the old video of Benny Goodman doing sing, sing, sing and watch Gene going crazy on the drums. I don't think I have seen a more energetic drummer anywhere

I also like Matthew Marsolek, Michael Marsolek, Lawrence Duncan, Nathan Zavalney, and Dave Marsolek of the drum brothers (local band) they switch off playing other instruments, but mostly it's all drums.

as for Rock and Roll, Keith Moon comes to mind
Chris Laton- Double Trouble
Ron Harper- Santana Blues Band- favorite drummer to listen to out of this whole list
in fact, I'm listening to soul sacrifice right now

Dont remember if I posted (too lazy to go through 12 pages), my picks:

1) Chris Adler -- Makes dual bass unboring and doesnt go overkill on them but still utilizes them perfectly, have fun trying to emulate that, best drummer I've heard up until this point in time. All his fills and rolls are top-notch, I have yet to find floor toms that sounds like his, its quite unique.

2) Dave Lombardo -- Bow down for you are not worthy

3) Joey Jordison -- Fast feet and overall excellent techniques, def. one of my favourites.

4) Lars Ulrich -- Although not complex drumming, he's still a kickass drummer, and the fact that he makes not-so-complex drumming good should make you think twice.

Honoroble Mention: Derek Roddy (fasted dual bass I've ever seen/heard but that's all he's good at).

I'm surprised by the number of people who have said that Lars Ulrich is a "great" drummer. He is definitely... a drummer, but nothing special really. Of course, you could put a quadruple amputee behind the drum set for MetallicA and I would still listen to it.

My personal favorite drummer is Vinnie Paul. (Formerly of Pantera/Damageplan) He's one of the few metal drummers I've listened to that plays with insane speed and technicality, rather than just playing fast and heavy.

Also, there as an amazing video of Tony Royster Jr on Kazaa.
All drummers should see this video. The kid drumming is 12 years old. It will TOTALLY freak you out!
It's about 21 MB.

It's also on YouTube:

I completely agree. He's my my long time favourite and I can't see anyone coming close to him when it comes to pure swing drumming.
#1 for rock would be John Bonham and for all around jazz etc. I like Tommy Igoe.
