Like the title said I am making this post for no reason other than I feel like it and you chaps are into books.

I was just given a present. It is a beautiful, leather bound, stitched spine, copy of

Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut (http://www.duke.edu/~crh4/vonnegut/)

it is embossed with 22KT gold

The person who gave the book to me knows that I believe him to be the greatest ever American Author.

For anyone who knows these things it is the Easton Press (http://www.eastonpress.com/) version.

It is signed by the author. As someone who is into books I think it is awesome.

ok.....you succeeded, I'm jealous now <_<

no really, I like Vonnegut a lot, I've read Slaughterhouse 5 like 10 times since I was 15 and every time I discover new things in it.....

The first "real" book I read was God Bless You Mr Rosewater. I was probably 12 or 13.

Prior to that I had only read school books. I just picked it up cos it was lying on a table and started reading it.

I really think that, had it not been for that book, I may not have started reading, which was a life changing experience.

I, like you, have read Slaughterhouse 5 on several occassions. I believe the book was greatly affected by his own experiences during the firebombing of Dresden. Like most people he realised that it had no military significance and that all we had done was destroy a city full of beauty.

my first book was called brisil face dont rember by whom
it was a bout a dog that was a foxhound and was vary good

we had it as a reading assinment when i was in 6 grade and i was supost to read 1 chapter a week and do a report on it each week and ended up reading the whole thing in 2 days

so i did the report on the whole book and my teacher was amazed as i was so poor in english i am sure u have all noteced my poor spelling and puntuation
but i seems reading and writing have nothing to do with each other im more the tech type (left brained i think they call it) and english has no rules too it now if every sound had a letter for it i would be fine but unfortunatly it dosnt

any way since i finished the book so quick my teach said i could just read any book i wanted for the reports and i ended up reading like 30 books that year my brother was all ready in to SiFi and he turn me on to heinlein with are exelent books for a newby reader easly understandable by a junile so that stared me off on my love of books

i am now 42 and have over 6000 books ( 2 whole rooms in my house are nothing but book cases) most all sifi my sifi libary is is bigger then most evey public libarys sifi section that i have been to (and i been to a lot of em)

now i have descoved kazaa and im trying to get all my books in compuer forum but unless something drastic happens ill never give up my hard copys

Btw my list is up to 1790 ebooks so ill be updating my can again soon :)

ps any one eles haveing a lot of trobble with K-sig when u put too many files in at 1 time? i had to go get sig2dat to do my last list with it cuse ksig just stops responding when i add too many files

First book I loved was about a rabbit as well - Sonny the Lucky Bunny - I still have it, still love to read it to my daughter, as she loves it too.

The first real book I really loved, though, was Where the Red Fern Grows. I get a tear in my eye still whenever I think about it....a boy and his dogs...:'(

I've never really been encouraged to read cos my family aren't that big on reading (i mean my dad's practiacally illiterate!), but beleive it or not i started reading properly when i was about 12 - I discovered Harry Potter!

since then, I've read all of the Harry potter books, Charlottes web, The Hobbit, Lord of The rings, alan Spence's Way to go, Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes and 'Tis, Stupid White men, Steven King books, a whole load of other obscure books and I'm going to read 4 Discworld books when I'm on holiday next month.

It may sound like a pretty crappy list, but I'm proud of it! No-one taught me how to read till i was 5, so I was a bit slower with reading.

:)

And yes Skweeky is a nutcase - but we love her anyway!

I also started reading and writing at 2. My parents were very active in my development as a child. The first book I remember reading though was the Hobbit. My Dad took it away from me when I was about 7, (I had already read a few times), and I cried for hours.

By then I was going to the library anyway.

Best author? Poul Anderson.
Best team? Poul Anderson and Larry Niven

In High School I found Heinlen rather simple appealing to the smut crowd more than the science fan base. Though not all of it is bad.

Lamsey's mum says that when he was two he used to wander around the supermarket with her and read out labels of the stuff on the shelves...she remembers being impressed by "dis-en-fec-tant - look mummy! Disenfectant!"

At that age I was at a similar stage to my nephew David - "Look! I've got legs!"

He isn't the only one: my grandmother was a former teacher... So I was trained to read really early. Writing came later though! I wasn't interrested in writing line after line of A, B, C... I just wanted to read nice stories (well, the ones you think nice when you're a kid!)
But now, reading's one of my great pleasures in life. Wouldn't be able to survive without reading for more than 2-3 days, actually!

i've still got a box with about three hundred ladybird books in it. i was a late bloomer....never started reading til i was three or four.

i also seem to remember going to bed to the strains of andy pandy!!!!!!

i've also still got a kids poetry book, my kids read it now, and its got a poem in it called "the triantiwontigongolope" (i think thats how you spell it) it was my favourite all time read. i can still recite that poem on a good day.
